Mary Draper Ingles Trail

This historic trail generally follows the escape route of Virginia pioneer, Mary Draper Ingles who was a captive of Shawnees in 1755 at the outset of the French and Indian War. Mary, accompanied by a captive Dutch settler, found her way back home by following the Ohio, Kanawha, and New Rivers. (The cache section of the trail follows a very tiny “river”.) This trail honors native Americans, American settlers, and all who have traveled this great east-west corridor in war time and in peace time through the hills and mountains of the Allegheny plateau wilderness.

Read more about her 800 mile journey on foot over a six-week period at (visit link)

The Mary Ingles’ saga is the subject of Alexander Thom’s best-selling and widely acclaimed historical novel Follow the River available at all WV book stores. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE WV NOVEL?

THIS IS A CHILD FRIENDLY CACHE BUT THE TRAIL WILL BE WET AND MUDDY IN SPOTS AFTER RAINY WEATHER. IF IN DOUBT, WEAR YOUR BOOTS.

Cachers are invited to follow the yellow blazes beyond the cache and explore the Mary Draper Ingles Trail further into Kanawha State Forest. Please follow the established trail most of the way to the cache. Off-trail hiking is discouraged as it negatively impacts the environment.

Special thanks go to the Parks and Recreation Section of the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources for permission to place this cache in Kanawha State Forest, and to the Mary Ingles Trail Blazers Chapter of the West Virginia Scenic Trails Association Inc. for their support and permission to use their brochures.

I finished reading the book I picked up as Fourth To Find. What a great read! It gives you a real appreciation for what life was like in those days. It makes me appreciate the security of my home today! I plan to deposit my copy of the book back in the cache but my wife and KevinM12345 (who didn't find the cache quite early enough ) have expressed an interest in reading it before I put it back.

Out caching before the WWFM in Charleston. Nice leg stretcher and great hide. Found coords to be a little off, but recognized GZ from posted photo, as I was studying the area. Another one of those areas, and books, I would have never known about had it not been for geocaching. Thanks LAA for another great puzzle and hide! TFTC/TNLN/SL.

I thought I had solved the puzzle for the cache a few weeks ago. However, the reference I used to help solve the puzzle gave a misleading answer for one of the coordinates, so when I tried searching for it last weekend, I was pretty far off the mark, although I did get a good hike in. After confirming with Scott2 that I had the wrong coordinates, I checked the puzzle using a more reliable reference, and my search on Friday the 13th was far luckier. T - travel bug, L - geocoin. Thanks for the cache - it was a good one!

PS - When I was out last weekend, I found a cell phone in the trail. It's probably unlikely it was dropped by a cacher, but if anyone lost one, let me know.

I decided to take advantage of the ideal November weather we're experiencing and pretended I was Mary Draper Ingals and followed the cree...er...river during my lunch hour. It was perfect weather and very quiet in the woods. After some careful creek-hopping to keep my shoes from getting wet, I found the cache in good shape. It was my lucky day because the STF didn't take as book which turned it into a 4thTF prize for me! I left a couple gizmos that kids would enjoy. Veering off of the MDI trail and following the ATV trail looked like it could be an interesting bike ride. I may have to return!

Congratulations to Scott2 for being the Third-To-Find. Enjoy the book. I hope the little cacher cheered up later in the bright sunshine.
