Ten zuidoosten van Epen ligt in het Geuldal enigszins verscholen achter hoogopgeschoten struiken dichtbij de Belgische grens een kale steile wand, die zich over een lengte van 75 meter uitstrekt: de Heimansgroeve. Een van de meest bekende geologische monumenten in Nederland. Hier komen de oudste gesteenten van Nederland aan de oppervlakte. Een geologisch begrip. Hier zijn afzettingen ontsloten uit het Boven-Carboon, 270 millioen jaar oud. De platen leisteen werden oorspronkelijk in zee afgezet als klei. Vele miljoenen jaren later werden de inmiddels verharde lagen geplooid. Zichtbaar zijn naar bovenliggende plooien: anticlinalen en dalvormige plooien: synclinalen. Op de leistenen zijn bovenin de groeve zandsteenbanken aanwezig die mogelijk in een kustklimaat zijn gevormd. Men vindt hier ook plantaardige fossielen en resten van schelpdieren, schaaldieren en weekdieren. Eli Heimans. Eli Heimans (1861 - 22 juli 1914) Nederlands onderwijzer en natuurbeschermer, werd in 1861 geboren in Zwolle als zoon van Jacob Heimans. In 1882 vestigde hij zich als jonge onderwijzer in Amsterdam. Hij ontdekte de natuur vlak buiten de stad. Doordat hij een uitstekend waarnemer was en goed kon leren, groeide zijn kennis van planten en dieren snel. Bovendien had hij ook belangstelling voor geologie.

Here are cordons unlocked out the Upon Carboon 270 million years old. The slabs slate were original take off in the sea as clay. Many million years later the meanwhile hard coats were arranged. Visible are to above folds: anticlinalen and valleyfolds synclinalen. On the slates are at the top of the groove sandstonebanks present who possible in a coastclimate are formed. You also find here vegetable fossils and rests of shellfishes, crustaceans and molluscs. Eli Heimans. Eli Heimans (1861 – 22 july 1914) Dutch teacher and (nature) conservationist, was born in 1861 in Zwolle as son from Jacob Heimans. In 1882 he settled as young teacher in Amsterdam. He discovered directly out of the town. Because he was an excellent observer and a good learner, his knowledge for plants and animals grow fast and he was interested in geological.
