Geocache Description:

Anne of Green Gables

This book was written by Lucky Maude Montgomery and published in 1908. This is the first book in a series of stories about Anne Shirley, that’s Anne with an “e”! Anne is an orphan girl who is mistakenly adopted by Marilla and Mathew Cuthbert, an older brother and sister who live in a home called Green Gables. She is constantly making mistakes, losing her temper and just driving people crazy with her constant chatter. And yet there’s something about her that you just can’t help but love. She finds a bosom friend in Diana Barry and develops a rivalry with Gilbert Blythe. The book follows her through the end of her childhood and finishes as she becomes a young woman.

Back in high school I tried out for a part in this play. We had so many girls and only a few boys try out that I ended up volunteering to play the part of Mathew. I loved it! It was so much fun to play a sweet old man when I was a teenager. This book has been entrancing young girls since it was first written. Who doesn’t love a girl who just messes up so much and yet is just so endearing that you can’t help but forgive her? I think my favorite part was when she dyed her hair green and when she floated down the river in a boat that sprung a leak and she had to climb on to the bridge. And of course, the changing relationship between Anne and Gilbert just makes you want to find out what is going to happen next.

About this series

When I initially sat down and started writing down the titles of classic children’s books I soon found a very long list. I decided to limit myself to some that are books that I actually read when I was a child, most of which I read several times, and loved. I still had a hard time narrowing down my search. There are so many fabulous books out there and the classics are still read for a reason, they’re great literature! So dust off your library card and go check out some of these wonderful books. I am initially hiding 9 caches for the Waukesha Janboree and it was not easy to only choose 9 classic books. Maybe you could include in your log whether or not you’ve read the book and what you took away from it.

This cache was hidden for the 2014 Waukesha Janboree. Permission has been given by the Waukesha City Parks and Rec for the placement of this geocache. Please be respectful of the environment and remember that this is a very high traffic area and you will need to be stealthy so that the geocache isn’t muggled.
