James Bond 007 Wherigo Cache

This cache has been archived.

Geocaching HQ Admin: The City of Portland has a new geocaching policy for geocaches placed on Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) property. The policy is intended to support the growing recreational activity of geocaching while also ensuring it does not negatively impact parks, properties, assets, staff or the public.

PP&R welcomes geocaches in many of its parks and properties. However, the property where this geocache is located is one that does not allow geocaches according to the new policy. (Note: Forest Park is divided into three management units - the northernmost unit between Germantown Road and Newberry does not allow geocaches.)

There are many reasons a park may not allow geocaches, based on the determination of the staff who manage each particular site. These reasons can include that the property’s primary focus is on habitat values, the potential conflicts with other park users, among other factors. Because this geocache is in a park that does not allow them, it been archived. As the geocache owner, you are expected to retrieve the geocache container and any associated physical stages within 2 weeks. After August 27th, your geocache may be removed by parks’ staff or other designated persons.

For questions about this policy, please contact Bryan Aptekar, Portland Parks & Recreation, bryan.aptekar@portlandoregon.gov.

Geocache Description:

This cache is part of the “007 mission” series of caches. This is the Wherigo cache adventure and was written to work in conjunction with the set of 007 Mission cache series.

The second clue zone is known to cause issues with triggering and it is on a very busy street, so be careful. (I'm looking into potentially opening up the zone or moving it if a can find a suitable location.)

If played as intended I estimate that it would take from 4hr and up. to complete this cache, including the set of regular caches that are involved in this adventure, if you make the correct selection and do not get stuck in traffic. It will have you driving all over Portland and the surrounding areas. As part of the Wherigo you will need to save off and close the Wherigo cartridge at times and set out on finding one of the other caches in this series. At each clue location in the Wherigo cartridge you will need to find a clue indicating which "007 Mission" cache you have to complete before you go to the next clue site. When you complete the mission cache and collect the needed information, you can resume the Wherigo and go to the next clue location where you would need to answer a question based upon the information retrieved from the mission cache when you just finished. It will be up to you to figure out which missions you need to complete as part of the Wherigo. (You will not need to find all the 007 Mission caches, just some of them.)

The final cache is only available between 5am and 10pm and there might be similar restrictions on some of the needed mission caches also.

Be very careful when saving and restoring the Wherigo cartridge, since a failure might cause you to have to do a lot of driving all over again. Should this happen you do not need to redo the caches you have already completed, but you will need to revisit the zones in the cartridge to answer the question.

One clue is that by the time you finish up, you would have completed five different cache types. Since the Wherigo includes finding at least one unknown/puzzle cache in the series it might be advantageous to solve some of the puzzles ahead of time.

It might also be wise to save the information you collect as you go along and also write down the coordinate information you are given during the game.

This cache is not at the posted coordinates; they are to the starting point of the adventure. The Whereigo cartridge is available from the related Web page. Be sure to log the WIG Cart upon completion. Hopefully you find it entertaining, and I also hope that this one will work for most. Please log the WIG cartridge at wherigo.com and the cache at geocaching.com. If you run into issues with the cartridge please let me know and I’ll try and fix it.

It has come to my attention that at the last clue zone there might be two possible solutions. Choose the mission that will be on the way to the final location from where you are at that point.

The final cache container has now changed to a camoed bison tube. (BYOP!)
