Geocache Description:

should be a cache and dash

"Magnificent drinking water". It wasn't long before the residents found the clean cedar water was good for brewing beer and ale. Soon many breweries were in operation.

They also found the climate and soil favorable for growing grapes, and soon there were wineries. The first vineyards were planted in 1859 by JPH Weld.

LN Renault and Sons produced a champagne that compared favorably with those produced in France. Later at the US Centenial Celebration in Philadelphia, Egg Harbor City vinters were awarded first prize for both general exhibition and individual wines. By 1900, 95 different wine producers were identified.

An Agricultural Society was formed by the wine growers. They built a meeting hall and by 1880 were holding regular fairs. Though the society later disolved, these fairs were the forerunner of the Atlantic County Fair.

Renault is still in operation and is the oldest winery in the area.
