Lenape Park is an important link in a chain of parks which form
a greenway along the Rahway River as it passes through Union
County. This greenway acts as an important highway for birds
migrating from the coast to the interior of the state and from
South and Central America. Lenape Park's 400 acres are an important
resting and refueling stop for these migrants. It also provides a
safe nesting environment for some migrant species such as vireos,
orioles, warblers and thrushes.
Over 30 species of warblers have been spotted in Lenape
Park.
All warblers are fairly small. Most are arboreal, but some, like
the Ovenbird and the two waterthrushes, are more terrestrial. Most
members of this family are insectivores. Many migratory species,
particularly those breeding further north, have distinctive male
plumage at least in the breeding season, since males need to
reclaim territory and advertise for mates each year. The migratory
species tend to lay larger clutches of eggs, typically up to six,
since the hazards of their journeys mean that many individuals will
have only one chance to breed.
