Geocache Description:

Site of a 1943 B17 crash near Pingree Park Colorado

On Oct. 18th, 1943 eight men died when their B17 failed to clear the 12,148 foot peak of Stormy Peaks near Pingree Park Colorado. The night training mission originated in Rapid City, S.D.

The crash left tons of small pieces of aluminum, the four huge turbo-charged Pratt & Whitney radial engines, small puddles of once molten aluminum, and the tail section at the 10,200 foot level. The cache is a olive drab ammo can on the uphill side, under the tail section.

The local Colorado papers and the Forest service have published "directions" to the site. These directions, though sounding simple, cannot be followed on the most recently updated USGS map of the area. If you try to follow these directions with out a map and compass, not only will you not find the B17, it may be quite a while before you find your way out of the forest.

I have reproduced the Forest Services directions here. You will see what I mean. The directions, I believe, are intentionally vague to keep the place a bit sacred.

Forest Service Directions:

"From Pingree Park campus(of CSU), follow the Stormy Peaks trail to the Twin Lakes turnoff.
Once at Twin Lakes follow the trail/road to the right around the west end of the reservoir.
Continue along the trail/road going right. Veer left at a fork.
As the trail narrows, pass three posts and climb a steep hill entering the wilderness area.
Follow a trail along a ditch, then through a clearing. Continue on the trail to the oulder field where the remains of the plane can be seen."

There is no doubt that you have found it when you enter the boulder field.

I have entered some waypoints related to the Forest Services directions in the hints.

Good luck!

Remember, this is a crash site where men lost their lives. Please leave the site in tack.
