Geocache Description:


Ode View is a tough ascent that will take you upwards through loose rock, boulders, agave, cholla, brittlebush and juniper. These obstacles become increasingly more dense as you approach geozone. Your reward for this effort is a tremendous view over Borrego Springs and far beyond to the Salton Sea including ABDSP peaks: Indianhead, Rabbit, and neighboring Webo. This is the Eastern approach to the San Ysidro Mountains and peak baggers have stopped by to sign in and hike through.

If you love bouldering you might enjoy the ravine challenge; I hiked the first 1.5 mi across flat desert floor, caught the ridgeline at N33 15.212 W116 25.146, climbed up and over Ode, continued my ridge climb to geozone and then onward toward Kay. There is a Benchmark somewhere on Ode around 1510’ but I wasn’t prepared and missed it this trip. You can’t miss the Kay summit register at 3587’ placed by SDPS in ’97, just 5’ from Kay Benchmark. Last visitor was in May 2006; it was also noted in summit log that a large rattlesnake was seen, so take care!

Kay is located between Hellhole Canyon and Borrego Palm Canyon off of S-22. I parked at the Maidenhair Falls Trailhead at N33 14.869 W116 24.364 but you could also park at the ABDSP Visitor Center.

Be prepared for desert hazards and please re-place the container as you found it. The view is your reward. There is a sealed 1-liter bottle of Kirkland water next to cache. It can be windy in this exposed location and brutally hot here in the summer. Enjoy!!
