Geocache Description:

Located a stone's throw from the road, in southwestern Chatham County.

[The trash/etc. has gotten so nasty in this area, that I've archived this cache. 2005/03/07]

"It's THE DEVIL'S TRAMPING GROUND, the Chatham natives say. And the story is that the Devil goes there to walk in circles as he thinks up new means of causing trouble for humanity. There, sometime during the dark of night, the Majesty of the Underworld of Evil silently tramps around and around that bare circle-thinking, plotting, and planning against good, and in behalf of wrong. So far as is known, no person has ever spent the night there to disprove that this is what happens ... This cleared spot, surrounded by trees, comprises a perfect circle with a forty-foot diameter. The path itself is about a foot wide and is barren of any obstruction - growing or otherwise. "
From the 1949 book, "North Carolina Mystery Stories," by John Harden.

This legend has been handed down from generation to generation of residents in this section for upwards of 200 years.

Litterers have made a mess of the area, but it's a curious and rather eerie spot nonetheless. It is being listed as difficulty star-and-a-half only because there sometimes is water in a ditch separating the area from the road, which may have to be hopped across.
