Un bonito paseo por el parque más famoso de Bilbao.
A nice walk through the most famous park in Bilbao.
D. Tomás de Epalza, fue uno de los fundadores del Banco de Bilbao (actual BBVA). Hizo una gran fortuna, destacando en economía y la vida social de la ciudad. Se casó en 1859 con Casilda de Iturrizar. Tras la muerte de su esposo, Doña Casilda comenzó un periodo de colaboración con los más desfavorecidos de Bilbao. Así, financió la construcción de escuelas, colaboró con sociedades, enseñanza, grupos religiosos, etc.
Murió el 22 de Febrero de 1900 en su residencia, ubicada en la calle que lleva su nombre “Viuda de Epalza”, y en cuya fachada existe una placa conmemorativa. A su muerte, al no tener hijos, dejó importantes sumas de dinero para la Casa de Misericordia y el Hospital.
Mr. Tomas de Epalza was one of the founders of Banco de Bilbao (now BBVA). He made a big fortune, was web known in the economy and society of the city. He got married with Casida de Iturrizar. After the death of her husband, Mrs. Casilda began a period of contribution for the poor people of Bilbao. So she paid the construction of schools, contributed to social and religion groups, teaching, etc.
She died on 1900 February 22th at her home located in the street with her name “Viuda de Epalza” (Widow of Epalza). On the front of this house, there is a remembering plate. At her death, because of she had no children, she left important amounts of money to the Casa de Misericordia (home for old aged people) and the Hospital.
