Fantastic Field of Flowers Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

SolarGal: Turns out this geocache was not placed properly. If I'm able to retrieve it from the ranger, I'll post the photos from the camera. It was fantastic while it lasted. I was thrilled to introduce the park to people who had lived in the area for a long time but had never explored it. What a thrill to get notes from people who wrote excitedly about their wonderful discovery with family & friends. It saddens me that I'm no longer able to touch the lives of others & show them what CA native flowers can do to the soul, but that's the way it is. Thanks for the memories.

Geocache Description:

This area is well known for its spring wildflowers. After a 30 year fight to keep out development, it is now a county park. When you see it, you’ll see why people fought so long & hard for its preservation. In many places of California, non-native plants are taking over, but here, you can see the glorious diversity of our California Native Wildflowers. It’s all because of the serpentine soil (greenish tint) that is toxic to non-natives, but the natives have learned how to thrive on it. The soil is made from serpentinite, California’s state rock.

The park has over 500 different plants, 70 different birds & a bunch of other animals. While you’re here, be sure to explore the grasslands and the oak woodlands.

Come feast your eyes, join a guided walk to learn about the flowers (www.friendsofedgewood.org) or even volunteer to help preserve them. For a statewide perspective, see the California Native Plant Society (www.cnps.org).

Be sure you know what poison oak looks like before you come here (visit link) Otherwise, you’ll be verrrrrrrrrrrry sorry. You do not have to walk through poison oak to get to the cache so don’t torture yourself.

This park is very popular so be sure to be extra discrete during your hike. The trails will be muddy after a rain. Park hours are 8 am to 6 pm (hours can change). Park outside the gates if you think you’ll return after the gates are locked. Entrance & parking are free.
