Welcome to THE DARK SIDE (of) Geocaching. And the dark side of the
mountain too.
This is a little multi-cache with a difference.
This is a geocache that can ONLY be done in the DARK.
The contents of this geocache also has a theme – Things that
glow in the dark, things that flash when you squeeze them, things
that light up when you bounce them and general flashy, glowy,
lighty things. So please brings swaps of this nature.
To do this geocache, you will need the following items of
equipment:
1 – One powerful torch/bicycle light that has a long, straight
powerful beam. A wide angle beam will not do the job. It must be
able to light up / pick up a letter box number size reflector at
200m, in the dark.
2 – One or two general torches, to get you to the start, and back
again, or at least just back.
3 – Spare batteries?
4 – Good walking shoes – you need to walk in.
5 – A dark night – You will NOT be able to do this during the
day.
The only entrance to this area is via the fire trail gate
at
S 35º 34.761
E 149º 01.672
Follow the trail to the set coordinates. (See picture “The start”)
Once there, shine your powerful torch into the distance and a
reflective marker will “light up” like a beacon. Proceed to the
tree that has the marker on it, and then do the procedure once
again – You may need to walk around the whole tree shining your
powerful torch into the distance as you walk around the tree.
Another reflective marker will shine in the darkness. Proceed
onwards.
There are 7 reflective markers to be
found, and one final “X” marks the spot reflective
marker.
The pictures show just what you are looking for – One picture
shows how the reflective marker lights up when a light hits it at
night, the other picture shows the same spot during daylight – the
marker is practically invisible during daylight.
Man, its dark out there! (Try turning off your lights and look
at the stars)
IMPORTANT UPDATE - (OCTOBER 2005 &
OCTOBER 2007) - To find reflector no. 6, get to 5, then walk about
15m SE (over two fallen trees), walk around and shine your torch as
normal.
The cache is under loose bark at the base of the tree with the
"X", no need to go rummaging around elsewhere or disturb any other
vegetation.

Find...
At Night
- The reflective marker lights up at night when a light hits it.
- See the reflective marker up the tree.
During the day
- The same spot, but during the day, the marker is practically invisible.
The START
This is where you start; it is also where you can tie up your horse while you seek the treasure.

April 19 by Utta (134 found) Okay Mr Mountain Bike, we (Uncle Toad and I) finally managed to finish a night cache. However, I would add that since this brilliant cache was established, that what was once minor undergrowth is now rather large over-growth.From the fourth marker, finding number five is nigh on impossible without setting out on likely vectors and picking up the scent from well within the 100m mark. Same with reflector 7 and almost the X marks to spot, although the instructions for 6 are still a-ok. We spent considerable time searching through what looks like very healthy regrowth, but eventually found it exposed to the elements, but otherwise intact. We took a light stick and the tb coin and left a slightly reflective bandanna. That all said, this was a lot of fun, but harder work than anticipated. From 4 onwards it was difficult to locate the reflectors without additional effort and in relation to numbers 6 and 7, these trees' days are numbered so a new way to GZ needs to be contemplated at some point in the near future. TFTC, Ace!!
[view this log] | March 21, 2008 by winglen (2779 found) Hee hee - no coincidence that we were all here on the same night! After no visitors to this cache since Aug 07, we planned an assault-come-social event and invited along some friends. This was the night of the full moon, deliberately chosen to give us assistance on the return journey but heavy cloud cover kept the moon and stars from view. Nonetheless we had a great time. Walked in before dark and paused at the hut for a shared supper of biccies and cheese, grapes, homemade muffins and coffee. Once it was dark we launched into the cache, and found eveything pretty straightforward. Not as difficult as we thought it might have been, and lots of fun with so many people involved. "There it is!" Located the cache, logged and returned to the start for more sustenance then back to the road. Terrific fun, a very well done cache thank Mtbikeroz, and great company thanks friends. Definitely recommend this one.L Glow in the dark worms, T glow stick and coin.

| March 21, 2008 by Tealby (2047 found) Good Friday must be a good night for a walk on the dark side. I did pass 3 hikers on the way in, but they definitely weren't carrying a GPSr - saw them again on the way out too (they were waiting for a lift).Found the cache without too much trouble - at least the terrain was relatively flat for the hunt, but there were a few prickly bushes along the way that I blundered through. T: Spin GC & glow stick L: Homedg's Blue Jeep Racer GC, WDD GC & a flashing button TFTC & the good exercise at the start to get up that darned hill

| March 21, 2008 by mtrax (1189 found) a Long weekend.. and a coolish night.. might as well go for a little stroll... We had a little dinner snack near the Hut at the starting point.. cheese and biscuts and some hot choc etc.. then when it was dark enough set off... Found after a few minutes of wandering around in the dark ... lol Each of the group managed to find at least one of the way point markers.. We found extracting ourselves from the final GZ the hardest bit.Note the Final X was obscured more like a "Y" but cleared the new growth to make it more visible.. actually the 6th Marker was the hardest to find. Thanks from one night cacher to another... [This entry was edited by mtrax on Friday, March 21, 2008 at 2:47:09 PM.]
[view this log] | March 21, 2008 by McPhan (2578 found) 993. Pleasant night for a stroll. In fact I think I've done harder drive-bys than this one - not.In the company of the others logging tonight we hit the hills and had a blast. The company was excellent and so was the cache layout and execution. It's a pity that more people haven't done this cache - they are definitely missing a top experience. Once at the start everything is pretty smooth sailing, which is a surprise in itself for a MBO cache. Every one in the group found at least one waypoint and one of the many highlights of the adventure was Tealby's excited exclamation once she found one of the markers. Having 5 torches was a definite advantage as we could fan out and cover a much wider area. Thanks to the other members for the companionship and fun. Combined with the cache makes this one of the best caching experiences I've had. TFTC and for the effort you put in to creating it. Top job.
