Geocache Description:

MP#5

MP#5 is a continuation of the MP series that is devoted to the numerical interpretation of everyday problems that are experienced by geocachers. In this case, we delve into the relationship between the straight line and the circle. The ancients appreciated that there was a universal connection between these geometrical elements when they compared the radius with the circumference of a circle. The universal constant goes by the name of pi.

Pi is a transcendental number that is represented by a infinite series. To date, it has been expanded to a billion digits. As it is well known, the early digits in the series take the form 3.14159265...

The problem that has been devised for this workshop is to use the number sequence that is embedded in pi where the north and west coordinates can be located among the random numbers generated for pi when the expansion is carried to a finite number of terms.

The location of the MP#5 can be found in a transendental expansion in which the north coordinate starts at the 6,304,960 digit (the next seven digits are needed) and the west coordinate starts at the 2,545,608 digit (the next seven digits are needed) . In this calculation, the assumption is made that geocachers have access to modern computers that are connected to the internet. These calculations should not be attempted with slide rules or log tables.

The posted coordinates are for the nearby parking.
