Catoctin Mountain Park, Thurmont, MD, about one hour north of Washington, DC via 270N to 15N to 77W.
Catoctin Mountain Park has many hiking trails, long uphills and downhills, terrific vistas, big rock outcroppings, including Wolf Rock and Chimney Rock. Good park for dogs, kids, and adults. This cache is located in a hollow fallen tree along the trail between the Blue Ridge Summit Overlook and Thurmont Vista (both on park maps). It is in a clear Rubbermaid container with a white lid, measuring 6.5" x 6.5", and about 2" deep. Inside are a log book, pencil, a picture of me (so you can see what a cute dog I am), and my trademark: a state quarter, this one Maryland, as befits the location. You can reach this cache from many different trails, starting at the Visitor Center. The shortest trail is about a mile straight up from the Visitor Center (pretty good climb here), but for a longer hike, with views, I recommend the route we followed: head from the Visitor Center toward Cunningham Falls, then uphill past Hog Rock. Via this route, it's about 4 miles from the V.C. to the cache. Once you've found the cache, there are many ways to return, the longest being the full park loop past Wolf Rock and Chimney Rock, and the shortest being about one mile back down to the V.C.
