Geocache Description:

Part of the Isle of Man Film Series. As this site is only a short, easy walk (three-quarters of a mile) from the Sea Terminal in Douglas, it is a convenient place for this Travel Bug “Hotel”.

There are no special hotel rules, but whether or not you’ve already logged this cache, please use it to leave and retrieve travel bugs. Just write a note (on this web page) if you visit, or log it as found (on the first occasion). If you don't have a travel bug, don't worry!
The cache is hidden along the popular footpath that leads from The Nunnery entrance, between the grounds and the river (parking is usually possible here: note that there's no need to enter the IOM Business School grounds).
It may be best to take the box well away from the hiding place to a more discreet spot before opening it, as muggles may appear without warning. Make sure you re-hide it carefully.

The Nunnery and the Cinema

There has been a building on the site of The Nunnery since ancient times, although there is little detail available about the early structure. Robert The Bruce visited in 1313, on his way to lay siege to (and capture) Castle Rushen. The Priory itself was dissolved by Henry VIII in 1540, and only St. Bridget’s Chapel remains of the original buildings. The modern history began with the Taubmans, who purchased the property in 1776. The notable owner in the 19th Century was Major John Senhouse Goldie Taubman, Speaker of the House of Keys. In 1854, a memorial obelisk was raised in honour of Thomas Leigh Goldie, Lt Colonel of the 57th regiment, who fell in the Battle of Inkerman (Crimea) 5 Nov 1854. Recently, The Nunnery has become the Isle of Man Business School.

Continue along the path from the cache for a pleasant riverside stroll - as far as the railway bridge which marks the edge of a more industrial area.

The comedy Stiff Upper Lips, a Merchant Ivory parody, was filmed here in February/March 1996, and starred Sir Peter Ustinov, Prunella Scales, Frank Finlay and Brian Glover. Though not a huge success, it was in the forefront of the new Manx film industry and marked the beginning of a busy phase in the film production business here.

It is 1908 and in the heart of the English countryside romance is blooming. Aunt Agnes is eager to marry off her young niece, Emily, to a nice, rich man of the right class. Eager to help his sister along, Edward brings his good friend Cedric for tea. Emily, however, is not having any of it and after a public outburst, her Aunt decides to take the party abroad. Love is still in the air across the seas as Emily takes an interest in a servant and Aunt Agnes is drawn to an eccentric uncle of Cedric. All the action and romance is bound to end in marriage.

Another comedy, Relative Values, also used The Nunnery as a location in July/September 1999. This film starred Julie Andrews, William Baldwin, Stephen Fry, Colin Firth, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Sophie Thompson, Stephanie Beacham and Edward Atterton.

The Countess of the beautiful Marshwood estate awaits with dread the return home of her son and his bride-to-be, a famous Hollywood actress. But a former lover-both on screen and off-also arrives in hopes of reclaiming her. To everyone's surprise and amusement, the pretentious actress turns out to be the estranged sister of the Countess' personal maid. Chaos ensues at Marshwood and the 'Relative Values' of an intransigent post-war class system are hilariously exposed.

GPS signal could be faint along the path, and although there is enough sky view actually near the cache site itself (thanks to the recent storm), the hint may be needed.

The cache originally contained;
IOM TT cloth badge, IOM keyring, IOM eraser, fan, Piglet, blank CD-R, River Watch poster, Flying High Grover TB, HM C&E TB, Night Falcon TB, Mas Cerveza TB.
