Geocache Description:

Black and white smile on the TV screen,
The voice of a child.
It wasn’t so much what you said
As sweetness of style.
But we got around to appreciate,
Something really big was coming our way.
While you were standing just as tall as you could stand
In such a little frame.

When you rode off into the sunset,
It was the darkness you were chasing,
Leaving the storytellers behind,
So no one told of the first cold night you faced.
We took comfort then,
But now it all seems just like a bad dream,
And no shaking can awaken the sleepers,
Only screams.

Now the eyes that gaze in the distance
Look empty sometimes.
But empathy raises questions you just can’t seem to hide.
The intoxicating sorrow,
Like communion wine.
How confused are the brave when they pray for the passage of time.

You ask what it takes to become a man,
When the man you want to be is something more than just a man.
You keep waiting for the answers,
And you hope they come soon.
Meanwhile you improvise, waiting for some daylight,
Try to think of something you can use.
It’s like climbing a mountain to get a closer howl at the moon.

But fear of the sky only made the sun look brighter to you.
You were at your best when you didn’t quite know what to do.
Forever young, blazing the straight and narrow way.
It was eternal spring and you played it in the shadow of the Babe.

We love you, we need you, We are rigid without you.
There must be some silver lining, Some hidden gem.
We love you, we need you, We followed so closely behind you.
And we’re so tired of the time between now and then.
So tired of defining between us and them.

1968 (Fear of the Sky) by John Shipe, Renegade Saints

The cache is just short of the summit of McHugh Peak, elevation 4280’.
The hike is not too difficult but it will take a few hours depending upon which way you approach it. Prepare for the round trip to take between 4 and 6 hours depending on your level of fitness and speed of hiking. The elevation gain is rather gradual and once you have made the ridge the hike is easier. The last 800' to the cache include a 200' elevation gain, the summit and then a drop over the South side of the mountain. If you park at the nearby trail head off of Honey Bear you will be able ascend Coyote Ridge and follow the ridge line all the way to McHugh Peak.
The view from the top is sensational. Do not forget your camera, rain coat and water. Be safe and enjoy an amazing view and a scenic trip through Bear Valley if you want to take the exploratory approach to finding one of the many closer parking areas. Just remember closer doesn’t always mean quicker.

This is a ridge that just about everyone can do. It is not a race, take your time and enjoy the spender we are so lucky to live in. In the winter this cache could be very difficult to get and is best left for the snow free months, at least snow free at the summit.

There is an unactivated geocoin for the FTF.

This cache was placed under Chugach State Parks permit #05-099.
