A 10 year celebration! It's hard to believe that just ten short
years ago the "Selective Availability" for GPS technology was
discontinued. Those two dozen satellites orbiting the earth
suddenly had a new meaning to many of us, especially to Dave Ulmer.
With an idea, a bucket and a few items he had laying around, a new
sport was born; a sport that took off like wildfire. This sport
that was dubbed 'Geocaching". Since that time the number of active
geocaches around the world has grown to over ONE MILLION
strong.
One of the early thought processes behind geocaching was for its
participants to strive to be good stewards of the land and
wilderness that we all enjoy. One way to do this is through
C.I.T.O. (Cache-In-Trash-Out) events. This will be one such event.
It will allow us an opportunity to tie together two good things; a
chance to clean up our planet and a chance to celebrate this
significant anniversary date.
The event will be held on Sunday May 2nd, 2010 starting at
1:00p.m. at the above coordinates. These coordinates will bring you
to the southeast corner of the long-term parking lot at the
Pellston Airport. Permission to use this area of the lot was
granted by the airport manager. There are no parking fees here.
From this spot we will meet briefly to discuss our goal and plans,
then head out to begin our cleanup.
This Event will be held in conjunction with the Michigan
Adopt-A-Highway program. Come join us in the fight to keep our
state beautiful and our environment clean. Bottled Water, Trash
Bags, Latex Gloves and Safety Vests (limited supply) will be
provided. You may wish to bring a sturdier pair of gloves. Upon
completion of the pick up we plan to regroup at an area restaurant
for lunch and social time.
You are sure to be left with a great sense of accomplishment and
pride. So come along and grab a Smiley, chat with fellow cachers
and have a bite to eat and help celebrate this waypoint in
time.
Hope to see you there!
