How Geocaching Works
This cache is located behind the church, in Alto Community Cemetery.
The village of Alto was first named "Blackhawk". It is rumored that the Indian Chief of that name camped in this area during the Blackhawk War of 1832.
Martin Girder, who came in 1841, is said to have been the first settler. In 1845 the first of many Dutch immigrants arrived from Holland. The Dutch influence persists to this day in the names of the residents, the well tended farms, the churches,- even in the personal appearance of the people.
Silas Miller, a local saw mill owner and lay preacher, is credited for choosing the name "Alto". It most likely came from the Dutch word "Halte", meaning "stop" or "resting place".
The community holds a 2 day Fair the 2nd week of August on Wednesday and Thursday. This cache was placed on the first day of the fair in 2009.
If you can remove the caches namesake in it's entirety, I'll buy you lunch!
The container is not on any markers. This is a very active cemetery so please be respectful at all times.
