A cache hidden along the Harlem Valley Rail Trail. No need to trespass or go over the fence.
This letterbox hybrid is part of a series of caches celebrating the history of railroads in the Hudson Valley. This cache is for the New York & Harlem Railroad.
Inside this cache is a handmade stamp and tokens that are specific to this letterbox hybrid. You don't have to have a stamp of your own to claim the find, just log it as you would any other regular cache. Feel free to use the stamp in the cache but please return it and the ink pad to the bag for others to use. Also, please take only one token as they take a while to make. I hope you enjoy the series.
The New York & Harlem Railroad was created in 1832 as a commuter service between Manhattan and Harlem in NYC. It was one of the very first railroads in the US. In 1844 the line was extended to White Plains and then to Dover Plains four years later. By 1852, the railway continued all the way to Chatham, NY where it linked to other lines providing passenger and freight service to Albany. In the 1870’s, Commodore Vanderbuilt bought out the railroad and combined it with other holdings to create the New York Central & Hudson River Railroad. This section of the rail line became known as the Harlem Division and survived until it was deemed unprofitable and abandoned.
