NOTE!! TO ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR FIND YOU MUST LEAVE AT LEAST ONE HISTORICAL OR NATURE RELATED WAYPOINT IN THE LOG BOOK. NOT JUST ANY LOCATION BUT THOSE REALLY WORTH MARKING, ITS YOUR CHOICE!!
Should you reach this cache it is important you replace it in the same original position and orientation. Simply the location of this cache is worthwhile to visit.
I strogly recommend you to go up during late afternoon daylight, and if possible, to come down after the sun sets as you will enjoy the sunset or even the bright night panoramic view of Kyoto.
It is common for people to hike into the night here, not to mention there is less people around. late afternoon and night hikers are common along this trail, as I placed the cache at 8:30 pm I met a hiker whom showed me another great spot which you may also visit(N 35 01.176 E 135 48. 700 ), which was the very summit of the mountain, from where you may see as far as Osaka!. So dont worry if it gets dark, Just bring a flash light.
Daimonji (Mount Ookita)is one of the peaks along the mountain range flanking the east side of the ancient city of kyoto.
The cache is located somewhere in the mountain marked by a large chinese character, carved into the mountain itself through the clearing of some trees and visible from almost any place in Kyoto, this charakter is in the shape of a standing man with extended arms and legs, alone by itself it is read as " Dai " ( Meaning large or great ).
During summer, its shape is dotted with torches which allows it to be seen during the night from the city bellow. You may see 2 videos of this process which starts in a nearby temple in this website:
www.kyoto-np.co.jp/kp/topics/eng/2003aug/08-16b.html
As to the contents of this cache, I must add that it is basically a chache for great music lovers and those atracted to impresive sights aswell ( Us all! ), really breath taking, ( and not precisely becouse of the hike, if you know what I mean... ). Within are 10 music discs in large MP3 files format, 2 DVD disks with surprise slideshows ( home made and formated for US-Japan. Latter for Europe..), 4 alcaline batteries ( just in case),4 hand warmers, one travel bug and a log book and pencil.
When you visit the cache you will know what the "glass" stands for. I would prefer to have you trade some of your best music ( all types if good ) to trade, in this cache I have placed Music from all over the world, even Two great operas for those of you who like this genre (Satyagraha and Akhnaten. Check Amazon.com ) I would also love it if you would write down some of your beloved waypoints wherever, Historical, architecture or nature related and why not, good restaurants.
The start of the 25 minutes trail (non-stop hiking time) up the mountain is kind of hidden and difficult to find the first time, so I give it to you here as a compliment:
N 35.02716 E 135.79729 ( Arive at this spot, right in front of you is the door to the Siilver Temple or Ginkakuji. If you have the time go right in, a nice experience, if not, continue to the start of the trail )
N 35. 02798 E 135.79871 ( This is the real starting point of the trail )
After this point you will cross two small bridges over tiny creeks, from there up its just one trail.
The trail is not as hard as you might imagine watching the mountain from afar. You'll enjoy it but.... as you come down be careful in this spot: N 35 01.559 E 135 48.142, as the path splits in two. Stick to the path on the left, unless of course, you have a appointment with the Blairwitch at coffin-Rock, ( It really looks like that...! )
Good luck
