Geocache Description:

Hail To The Chief!

Gerald R. Ford
July 14, 1913 – December 26, 2006
We are bound together by the most powerful of all ties, our fervent love for freedom and independence, which knows no homeland but the human heart.
— Gerald R. Ford

It's a Presidential election year (2004) so what better theme for a cache? How much do you know about the men who have led our country? (I'm talking about the United States of America as of May 1, 2004.) Let's find out. A number of questions follow. Some will have obvious numeric answers. For example, consider the question "How many Presidents have been women?" The answer to this question would be zero. If, on the other hand, the question were "Which President stood tallest?", the answer would be Abraham Lincoln (at 6'4"). Since Mr. Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States the answer I'm looking for would be 16. If the answer to a question includes more than one President then the answer I'm looking for is the SUM as described. For example, if the answer to a particular question were to be "George Washington and George W. Bush," the value assigned to Washington would be 1 and the value assigned to Bush would be 43. The answer would be the sum of these, or 44.

You're looking for a cache, right? Answer all of the questions below. It'll be a history lesson. You'll learn something. You'll be surprised. Maybe you'll even be impressed! Once you have all of the answers you'll also have the information you need to find te cache. Add all of the answers to obtain a single number. Got it? Good! Divide it by 2 and discard the remainder (if any). Now divide it by 1000. Subtract the result from the minutes of both the latitide and longitude posted above. Now you've got the cache's actual coordinates.

Oh, and there aren't any trick questions. Assume the most straightforward answer. No slight of hand going on here. I'll even give you the answer to the first question. Four Presidents held the office of Vice President of the United States at the time they were elected to the office of President. They were John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Martin Van Buren, and George H. W. Bush. The answer to the question is 4.

About the Office ...

  1. How many Presidents held the office of Vice President of the United States at the time of their election?

  2. How many Presidents were defeated while seeking re-election to office?

  3. Who was the youngest President at the time he assume the office?

  4. Who was the first President to be born outside the original 13 states?

  5. How many Presidents have won the Nobel Peace Prize?

  6. How many Presidents attained the office by succession?

  7. How many Presidents have died while still in office?

  8. Which Presidents share a birthday (month and day)?

  9. Two Presidents died within hours of one another on the same date! That date happened also to be a special anniversary of a momentous event in American history. What anniversary was it? (Remember, you're looking for a number here)

  10. Another President died five years (to the day) from then. Which President was it?

  11. One President was elected twice to non-consecutive terms. Which President was it? (The answer to this question is the sum of two numbers).

Now, considering only FULL brothers and sisters ...

  1. How many Presidents were born the eldest son?

  2. How many Presidents were first born?

  3. Which President had the greatest number of siblings?

  4. How many siblings did he have?

And as to military service ...

  1. How many Presidents attained a rank higher than colonel while serving in the Armed Forces of the United States?

  2. A special military rank was created for one President that made him the highest ranking military officer in U.S. history. Which President was awarded this special rank? (Hint: The title is "General of the Armies of the United States" and is equivalent to a six-star general!)

  3. How many Presidents served in the United States Navy?

What about their family life?

  1. How many Presidents never married?

  2. How many Presidents married twice?

  3. Which President had the greatest number of children?

  4. How many did he have?

  5. Which President enjoyed the longest marriage (as of 12/2000)?

  6. Which living Presidents have become nonagenarians (as of 1/01/2004)?
(Please include the late President Reagan in this number.)

And generally ...

  1. How many Presidents were left-handed?

  2. How many Presidents' likenesses appear on currently circulated (1/2004) both coins and notes of United States currency?

Now that you have all of the answers, have you learned anything? I hope so. I know that I learned a lot while creating this cache. So, what are you waiting for? Go get it! Log your find. And, most important, VOTE!
