I found the Assiniwikam Mountain Cache last week and was very impressed with this new trail. It is called the Rhododendrum Trail but the markings look pink. I placed the cache approximately .16 miles from the Assiniwikam Mountain cache in an area with fantastic views. From Boy Scout Lake, the cache is approximately a half mile.
The easiest way to get here is to park at the Boy Scout Lake on Snake Den Road in West Milford (not the Snake Den Road in Ringwood where Weiss Ecology is located). From here take the Red Trail (white with a red circle in it). The Rhododendrum Trail loops off of the Red Trail and back on to it. Although the trail is very well marked, the start of it off the Red Trail is not. Look to the left for a pink marking. One of the red marking has pink trail written on it very small with an arrow to the left. The cache is about 15 ft off the trail in a very scenic area. To make a loop, continue on the Rhododendrum Trail which leads into the Yellow Trail. A few hundred feet later, the Red Trail crosses the Yellow. Make a right on the red to go back to the Boy Scout Lake. You can also start at Weiss Ecology but the hike is longer that way. The cache is a 30mm ammo box that contaims a poncho, hex key set, 4 peice tool set, glue gun, tire gauge and a whistle compass key holder combo.
