Voici l'histoire de l'Abbaye aux Hommes:
Vers 1050, Guillaume prit pour épouse Mathilde de Flandres, sa
lointaine cousine. Le pape Léon IX qui avait pourtant interdit ce
mariage, menaça le couple d'excommunication. En 1059, Guillaume
envoya à Rome, Lanfranc de Pavie, moine d'origine italienne, prieur
de l'abbaye du Bec Hellouin (Eure). Auprès de Nicolas II,
successeur de Léon IX, Lanfranc négocia le pardon de l'Eglise. Le
pape accepta mais demanda en pénitence, la construction de deux
abbayes et de plusieurs hôpitaux. Guillaume fît alors édifier, à
Caen, l'Abbaye-aux-Hommes, dédiée à Saint-Etienne et Mathilde fonda
l'Abbaye-aux-Dames, dédiée à la Sainte Trinité : deux abbayes
bénédictines, l’une pour les hommes et l'autre pour les
femmes.
L’Abbaye aux Hommes est un des rares monuments caennais à ne
pas avoir été bombardés durant la seconde guerre mondiale. Elle
aurait été sauvée à cause d'une légende vieille d'un millénaire: si
les deux clochers de l'Abbaye s'effondraient, la Monarchie Anglaise
serait abolie!!!
Depuis 1960, elle abrite la municipalité de Caen.

Here is the history of this abbey:
About 1050, Guillaume got married Mathilde of Flanders, his distant
cousin. Pope Leon IX who forbad this wedding, threatened the couple
of excommunication. In 1059, Guillaume asked Lanfranc of Pavie, a
monk from Italy and prior of the Bec Hellouin Abbey to go to Roma
to negociate the church forgiven with Pope Nicolas II, successor of
Leon IX. The Pope agreed but, in compensation, he wanted Guillaume
to build two abbeys and some hospitals. Then, Guillaume had the
Abbaye aux Hommes devoted to Saint Etienne built and Mathilde
founded the Abbaye aux Dames, devoted to the Saint-Trinity: two
benedictine abbeys, one for men and the other for women.
The Abbaye aux Hommes is one of the rare historic buildings of Caen
not to be destroyed by bombing during the battle of Caen. The
Allies would have been saved it because of 1000 year-old legend: if
both bell towers collapsed, English Monarchy would be
abolished!!!!
Since 1960, it has sheltered the town council of Caen.
