Ferry Cache II - Bremerton to Seattle Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

Bull Moose: Putting this one to bed. The area is a mess due to construction now and will be for a few years to come.
Perhaps after the construction is complete down there I will do another similar cache.

Geocache Description:

Since Ferry Cache I was such an astounding success, with a whole 3 finds on the date I wrote this, I decided to put up a sequel going the other way.

If riding the ferry is rare for you, then I encourage you to wait for a crystal clear day. I ride the ferry every day, M-F, but my breath is still taken away by the views on a clear day. At minimum, in order to collect the required numbers it must be light with a minimum visibility of ½ mile!

Ferry Information:

Please note walk-on fares are collected from Seattle only! The Bremerton to Seattle ride is fare free for walkers.

Suggested Equipment:
Sunglasses, preferably poloraized If it is a sunny day a pair of sunglasses will reduce glare off the water when reading the numbers.
Sport Glasses/Binoculars If you have less than 20/20 vision a pair of binoculars would be helpful. I have only fair eyes and was able to pick out the numbers, though.

Gathering the numbers:

Definitions: Starboard = The right of the boat when facing the direction the boat is proceeding.
Port = The left of the boat when facing the direction the boat is proceeding.
All directions are referenced from a Bremerton to Seattle run. If collecting numbers on a Seattle to Bremerton run, use the opposite direction reference.

Take note of the name of the ferry you are getting on as you board

Waypoint 1: In dock at the Bremerton ferry terminal. – Near N 47° 33.642’, W 122° 37.444’
Once you are on the ferry, proceed to any passenger area and look starboard. You’ll see a large, green, hammerhead crane in Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. The crane is no longer operational but it stands still as a historical point of interest. The crane was constructed in 1933 and was involved in the repair of many ships during World War II, including most of the ships damaged in the Pearl Harbor attack.
While looking in the shipyard you may see armed guards and Mrs. Moose wearing a white hardhat. Wave.
The number on the crane – not the pier number, the one above it = A

Now look port. You’ll see a naval ship that is now a floating museum. This ship was involved in the Gulf of Tonkin incident.
The number on the ship’s bow = B.

If you are at the terminal early, you’ll probably be able to find the number before getting on the boat.

Waypoint 2: Boat specific information.
If you are on the Kaleetan:
Go to the top deck. Near the door to the cabin on both the stern and bow is a life jacket locker. The number of adult life jackets in the locker = C

If you are on the Kitsap or Chelan:
Go to the stern or bow and look towards the car deck. The clearance is listed at the top of the opening in the center as 15 feet and C inches.

If you are on the Walla Walla:
Proceed to the sun deck (top deck). In the middle of the deck on both the port and starboard side is the top of a stairwell that also has a life jacket locker. The number of adult life jackets in the locker = C.

If you are on the Hyak:
Go to the top deck (a level above the main passenger deck where walk-on passengers load/unload). Near the door to the cabin at the forward (Seattle) end is a life jacket locker. A red plaque denotes the number of life preservers in the locker. The number of adult life jackets in the locker = C

Waypoint 3: 47° 35.315’ W 122° 33.935’
As you approach this waypoint look port and find a bluish gray house with a turret that overlooks the water. This house is on Bainbridge Island. Mrs. Moose and I are not rich enough to live there. I am glad, though, because there are only four caches on the entire island.
What is the color of the house directly between the turret house and the water?
If it is yellow, D=6, if it is gray D=8

Waypoint 4: N 47° 34.502’, W 122° 32.169’
Look starboard as approach this waypoint. You will be able to see a large building that is part of the Manchester Naval Refueling Station.
This building is tan and what other color?
If it is green E=4, if it is yellow, E=6.

Waypoint 5: N 47° 35.450’, W° 122 25.574’
The coordinates are for as near as the ferry passes to the Alki Point lighthouse. However, spot the lighthouse as soon as you can. You need to determine the number of seconds it takes for the light to make one revolution. The further out you can spot the lighthouse, the less the movement of the ferry will interfere with that process. I simply looked at the clock on my GPSr when I saw the light, and again when I saw it the second time. I came up with the same number consistently, so that method should work, and some error is built in to the answers.
How many seconds does one revolution of the light take?
1-3 seconds then F= 2; 4-6 seconds then F= 5; 7-9 seconds then F=8

Other waypoints of interest:
N 47° 34.233’, W 122° 35.565’ – Port – I can see my house from here! It’s up there on top of the ridge. Kind of by that big white building that used to be a fire station.

N 47° 35.450’, W 122° 25.574’ Starboard – Blake Island. There are three caches on the island, but you need a boat to get there. Does anyone have a boat that wants to take me?

OK you’re done. Enjoy the rest of the ride in and calculate the coordinates.

Coordinates for the final microcache: N 47° 36.XXX’ W 122° 20.YYY’
XXX= ((B/E)-A)-7.75

If you were on the Kaleetan: YYY=(C*2)+D+F-8
If you were on the Kitsap or Chelan YYY=(C*D*F)+F
If you were on the Walla Walla YYY=(D*F)+C+F
If you were on the Hyak: YYY=((C-20)*2)+D+F-8
(All extra parenthesis added for clarity)

The final cache is very near the ferry terminal. Happy caching!
