Geocache Description:

"Woe to you, Oh Earth and Sea, for the Devil sends the beast with wrath, because he knows the time is short...
Let him who hath understanding reckon the number of the beast for it is a human number, its number is Six hundred and sixty six."

"The Number of The Beast" - Iron Maiden (1982)

Background

The inspiration for this cache came from this discussion on the UK Forum. My curiosity was roused and I went searching for the nearest position with 666 as a component part. A shiver ran up my spine when I realised it was near an area in Mullagharry Forest locally known as "The Steeple" due to a tower built on the ridge. When I was young this area was the source of many rumours including devil worship and the disappearance of young blond haired and blue eyed children. It was all just stories to scare kids but the coincidence still gave me a shiver. This cache has been placed to mark the spot and also to mark that spookiest of dates 06/06/06.

Getting There

From Stranorlar follow the N56 to the Kilross junction at N54°50.089' W007°44.540'. Take the R256 for Convoy and turn right at N 54°50.828' W 007°42.510' onto the rough back road. Follow this road for approximately 2km and park at the forest gate N 54°49.818' W 007°43.016'. The back road is pretty rough for the last 1km but most cars should be able to make it with care.

PLEASE DO NOT TRY TO DRIVE INTO THE FOREST EVEN IF THE GATE IS OPEN. CARS, BIKES AND MOTORBIKES ARE NOT PERMITTED UNDER COILLTE'S OPEN FOREST POLICY. ALSO THERE HAVE BEEN PROBLEMS IN THE PAST WITH CARS BEING RACED AND DUMPED IN THIS AREA SO MEASURES ARE IN PLACE TO PREVENT ACCESS CLOSER TO THE SITE.

The Cache

A fairly simple two-stage multi-cache

Stage 1: An old pill bottle painted green with a geocaching label on the outside. This contains a laminated sheet with the coordinates for the next stage. Please replace the coordinate sheet before leaving the area. Tree cover may prevent good satellite reception in this spot so it's advisable to take the clue and/or the spoiler photo with you. If you pick the correct time of year for this cache the area is carpetted with bluebells and is a very impressive display.

Stage 2: A 1.6l tab-lock box with a geocaching label on the outside. When placed it contained the usual logbook, pencil, sharpener, assortment of trade items and a FTF prize.

PLEASE ONLY TRADE UP OR EVEN.

TBs MOVE BETWEEN CACHES AND REMAIN THE PROPERTY OF THE PERSON THAT RELEASED THEM. I DO NOT COUNT THEM AS TRADE ITEMS.

IF YOU WISH TO TAKE SOMETHING FROM THIS CACHE PLEASE DON'T LEAVE A TB IN IT'S PLACE. THANK YOU.
