American Gothic house. Made famous by Iowa artist Grant Wood as the
background house in his painting of the Iowa father and
daughter.
Wood had just returned from Europe and was amazed to find a Gothic
window in an Iowa farmhouse. He used the window's shape as the
motif for the painting "American Gothic". Although not open to the
public, visitors are welcome to view the house from the outside as
Grant Wood did in 1930 when he was inspired by its unusual Gothic
window. The State Historical Society of Iowa owns and preserves the
American Gothic House. It is listed on the National Register of
Historic Places.
The coordinates listed for this virtual cache are on the front
lawn where visitors normally stand to have their pictures
taken.
To log this as a find, strike an American Gothic pose and take a
photograph of yourself in front of the small white house that
stands there today. And of course, include your GPSR in the
photograph. You don’t have to be a male-female couple to qualify.
Do it as an individual or as a group then upload your picture to
this web page.
