A narrow-gauge railway Panevežys – Anykšciai - Rubikiai was
established in 1899. That time was known as the time of black
engines and wooden carriages.
In the beginning of the XX century the Siaurukas was the main
vehicle in the region of Aukštaitija (north-eastern Lithuania) for
carrying people and goods such as flax, bacons, sugar-beet, flour,
butter, flax-seed, wood and sand. The farmers transported salt,
fertilizers, burning oil and coal.
From the year 2001 the narrow-gauge has not been used any more
for the purposes mentioned above, the tourist trains are pulled by
locomotive TU-2. Nowadays it is an object of national cultural
heritage and is used for tourism, free time and entertainment
purposes.
