It's a Grand Old Flag Cache - CTF Lucky 13 ! Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

mythreal: I stopped by on the way home from work this morning to check out the reports of trash. I am sad to report that jpenn01's and beatnik's logs were not only correct but very understated. That area is not a place I would go caching in. I am very disgusted at the people that has left all of the crap in that park. There is even an old refridgerator dumped there. Since the flag has moved on and the park is in such horrible condition, I am archiving the cache. A special thanks to jpenn01 and beatnik for retrieving the flag for ExtremeMom and thanks to those who visited the cache.

Geocache Description:

Located in Topping Park in Oklahoma City. This is a two part multi cache. Coordinates are for the first part. Long pants and good footware recomended. You may also want to bring along a pair of gloves. Some steep terrain. Some briars etc in the area. As always in Oklahoma use tick precaution in warmer months and keep an eye out for snakes.

The cache is located in an Oklahoma City park that many don't know about. Topping Park has been in existence for 50+ years. Originally Grand Blvd circled Oklahoma City and shared a short section with historic Route 66. That portion of Grand/Route 66 ran along the northern side of Topping Park. I am sure many weary travelers stopped there to take a break. Due to new Interstate highways many portions of Grand Blvd have disappeared including the section that was next to this park. Some maps still show the park while others do not. A search of the Oklahoma City Parks and Recreation's web site does not turn up any mention of Topping Park. Portions of the original park appear to have been sold and businesses built there. Thousands of people pass within 200' of this park every day without knowing it is there.

Part of the difficulty in finding this cache will be finding the park entrance. A few locals will drive right to it but those not intimately familiar with OKC may have more trouble. The address of the park is 201 NW 50th. The coordinates for the Parking lot are N 35 31' 34.06 W 97 30' 56.80.

This is our first cache so we are interested in feedback on the rating. Please let us know if you think we rated it too high (or too low). This is a two part multi cache and both containers are painted to blend in with its surroundings. There is a short but steep incline that has to be negotiated to get to the cache sites. There are also briars in the area but if the correct path is chosen you should not get stuck. The coordinates for the second stage are in DMS format. I do NOT recommend the direct route to part two unless you are Brer Rabbit.

There are plenty of cache in trash out opportunities here so bring along an extra bag and take some with you.
Since this is number 13 in the Capture the Flag series (originated by Darkmoon) we have made this a 'Lucky Charm' themed cache. Please trade 'Good Luck' items and perhaps this park will not disappear entirely. We have placed several ‘Lucky Charms’ from various cultures inside the cache.

Parental Caution: Missouri Okie kindly pointed out "this Park is a Place where Gay Men meet and Pick up other's". On weekends this park is used by Model Airplane enthusiasts. On my visits to the park, the Airplane enthusiasts were the only people present.

Original cache trade items include:
Horseshoe key chain - 2
Four Leaf Clover Pin
Lucky Dice – 3 pair
Scarab beetle
Lucky Ducky
Natural Crystals – 3
Lady Bug bookmark
Medicine Bag
Lucky Pennies
GeoTroll Travel bug (rescued from GCHEMX and turned into travel bug)

Also inside are:
Logbook and pencil
‘The Flag’ (this not a trade item – this is to be taken only by someone from Tulsa county who will then be required to place it in a new cache in Tulsa county)
FTF prize – your very own special ‘Good Luck’ charm.

Good luck and thanks for visiting our first cache – Team Mythreal

Additional Comments
The flag in the cache is not a trade item, it is for the game...please do not take it if you are not willing to play by the rules!

Special thanks goes to wzbt03 for this original idea!
