The Boar’s Nest Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Moore9KSUcats: water is well away from the cache area, but the cache is not there. I moved several rocks and poked through the dirt, but didn't find the ammo box. We searched the area, and then searched a long area of the high water line in hopes it had floated uphill, but couldn't find it. Mark this one a casualty of the June flood!

If you want a good challenge, come and see if you can find it. It may be just about anywhere between here and the dam.

Geocache Description:

Here’s a chance to stretch your legs a bit. A scenic 1 mile hike (each way) on one of the rougher portions of the Goodwater Trail.

Along the Goodwater Trail there’s an old road called “Jim Hogg Road”, which got me to wondering if Boss Hogg was part of Georgetown’s history. Turns out this “Boss Hogg” was a very popular and well respected governor of Texas in the 19th century and there are roads and parks all over the state bearing his name. So much for what I’d hoped would be a great story!

The only interesting thing I found in my research was that he named his daughter “Ima”, so his sense of humor is suspect at best. (Urban legend has it that his sister may have been named “Ura”)

The Cache is .30 Cal ammo can and is located where it should survive most flooding. The Cache is only about 20 feet above the normal lake level, so don’t try this one when the lake is in flood stage - unless you’re really into 5/5 caches!

If you use auto routing to get to this cache, be warned that Garmin Mapsource still thinks this a drivable road and will route you to Camp Tejas, through a chained gate, down what’s left of the raod, and from there through the lake! If your cachemobile is The General Lee, go for it!! For the rest of us, go to the trailhead at Russell Park (trailhead is open year round, but the park closes in the winter). Or for an easier but longer hike, it’s a fairly flat 3.8 mile hike (each way) along the old road from Camp Tejas.

Good boots and a hiking stick are recommended as the trail is very rocky in places. Be sure to bring plenty of water, since there are no facilities along the trail. The trail is teeny tiny twisty turny in places, but the cache is only 10 feet from the road/trail. Do yourself a favor and don’t get tempted to bushwhack when the GPS says 100’s of feet and the arrow points 90 degrees (or even 180 degrees) off the trail. YOU’VE BEEN WARNED!
