Lord Pigginshaw used to have an old manor house nearby. He was an avid reader and a great collector of wierd and wonderful obscure books and manuscripts. Indeed, he was widely known to have one of the most extensive private libraries in the world.
Unfortunately, on the 31st December 1799, a devastating blaze tore through the old manor house. The old Lord's life was claimed that fateful night. The only living heir was the Lord's 3rd cousin twice removed, a Frenchman by the name of Charles Messier, who was duly summoned.
Upon arrival, he inspected the damage. The glorious old manor house, full of timber beams, was reduced to a large pile of ash. The enormous library had been completely destroyed. Out of the many hundreds of thousands of books and manuscripts, only one had anything readable remaining.
The front cover and only readable page are below.
