Geocache Description:

This cache is a bit of an homage to Karl Olav and Ania's geocaches. Good caches by good cachers ...but there's something missing. So, we created the Krakow Walker.

It's not mentioned in many tourist guides if any at all ...but there is a nice trail that links Pilsudski Mound and Kosciuszki Mound. You can't really say you've really visited Krakow without visiting the two major mounds but that's kind of inconvenient to do unless you know about this path. The first half is paved and is a nice, gentle walk. The second half is hard-packed dirt and is a little more strenuous but not too bad. Total length is 3.5 km. Along the way, if you want, you can bag three other geocaches (total length then, one-way, is 5.5 km). Not too bad. So lets get started.

Getting there: You can catch the #100 bus from "Rondo Grunwaldzkie" (N50 02.939 E19 55.878) which is about 500 meters from Wawel Castle. There is also lots of parking next to the bus stop and all over the hill.

Before you go: Remember to print out this cache page before you take off. Remember to bring a pen and maybe a calculator. Also, note that at each waypoint we may ask you to do addition, subtraction, multiplication or advanced calculus. So read the instructions carefully! Ok, NOW let's get started.

Waypoint #1: N50 03.202 E19 53.857. The coordinates are for a #100 line bus stop at Kosciuszki Mound. At the coordinates is a sign for the #100 bus. Above that sign is a "NO SMOKING" sticker with some information on it. Look at the second line of text, a three-digit number, on that sticker. It will look like: "nr XXXII/###/08 Rady"...
  • Bearing to Waypoint #2: [three-digit #] - 127 = ### degrees
  • Distance to Waypoint #2: [three-digit #] + 351 meters = ### meters
Sidetrack: Now that you've done all that, you might want to sidetrack for just a moment and grab The Kosciuszko Mound aka GCKY4M. A good cache and a great view from the top of the mound and a little museum inside, too.

Waypoint #2: Moving right along to the next waypoint. At Waypoint #2 is an informational sign quite a lot of information on it. The line reads, "Wznoszacy sie na okolo ### metrow nad krakowski rynek Sowiniec (### m npm) wraz"...
  • Bearing to Waypoint #3: [Add up both numbers] - 185 = ### degrees
  • Distance to Waypoint #3: [Add up both numbers] - 195 = ### meters
Waypoint #3: This one's a bit off the main trail. For all of you foreign geocachers, this very well may be your first Polish benchmark. They're not quite as nice as the US's National Geodetic Survey markers but whatever floats your boat, eh? Well, when you get to the marker, look at the big tree right next to it. There's a three digit number on it.
  • Bearing to Waypoint #4: [Three digit number] + 63 = ### degrees
  • Distance to Waypoint #4: [Three digit number] x 5.08 = ### meters
Waypoint #4: There's a signpost here with a lot of information on it.
  • Bearing to Final Waypoint: [last number, next to "Jadwigi"] x 7.66 = ### degrees
  • Distance to Final Waypoint: [first number on the sign, under "Krakow". Convert from Kilometers to Meters. E.g.: 2,7 km = 2700 meters.] / 2.31 = ### meters
Final Waypoint: You'll arrive to see a tall, 4 meter "snag" - part of a tree left behind after a storm. If you see this, you're very close. When you find the cache, please be sure to replace it exactly where you found it and cover it up!

Nearby: After you've grabbed the Krakow Walker, why not swing by Kopiec Pilsudskiego in Kraków aka GCM2RD and then grab Lost in Las Wolski, Kraków aka GCMFZ3. Four for the day and a nice little walk, too. Not too bad.

Getting back: To get back to the city from Kopiec Pilsudskiego, go to: N50 03.301 E19 51.318 and catch the #134 bus to Cracovia. From Cracovia, near Hotel Orbis, you can catch a bus to just about anywhere.

Original cache contents: A 1,5 litre container with log book and pen, glasses case, two 1850 mAh Energizer batteries, 256MB Lexar Compact Flash card and a Delkin PCMCIA Compact Flash Card reader. If you take something, leave something!

Caution: There are ticks and mosquitos in the forests. It would be best if you wear the appropriate clothing (long sleeves, trousers, etc) and/or bring bug spray.
