Geocache Description:

Black canister located at the base of a small birch tree. Enjoy the views of the town and surroundings.

The “Sugarloaf” is a small hill overlooking Fort William, hence the splendid views. In March 1746, Fort William was in the hands of General Campbell and his government forces. Bonnie Prince Charlie’s Jacobites decided to have a go at taking the Fort as part of the Jacobite uprising. Seige cannon were sent down from Jacobite Fort Augustus and an attempt was made to bombard the town from the “Sugarloaf” hill. The gunners clearly weren’t too good at calculating distances, and the cannonballs fell way too short. The guns were then moved closer to the town, but Campbell’s forces had little difficulty capturing them and neutralising the threat. The siege wouldn’t have worked anyway - the town’s supplies arrived by sea! Look at the front (North side) of the Sugarloaf (either by walking round it, or looking up from the main road below) in order to understand the hint.
