Geocache Description:

The Dunedin volcano was active around 10 - 13 million years ago, when this volcano finally exploded the result was Dunedin, it left behind all the mountains we know today and the beginnings of the lovely city we live in.

As another result of the explosion, Dunedin was left with Basalt columns. These were formed with the rapid cooling of the lava when it reaches the earths surface, they can be found on the peninsula, The Black Head quarry but they are most commonly know at a location on Mount Holmes as:

The Organ Pipes.

The unique shape of these basalt columns are a result of contraction of the rock as they are cooling and crystallising. Creating a 6 sided column like basalt rock. Their name has been given to them due to the way they tower above at different heights, similar to that of an organ. Many of these spectacular columns have now fallen due to earthquakes and weathering.

To log this cache you must, go to the given co ordinates and measure the length of one of these Basalt columns. (does not mater which one, meaning you do not have to climb to the top of them where the co ordinates are. Just as long as the one you measure is still standing.) And send your measurements to me in email.

You must also take a picture of the column you have measured preferably with your GPSr somewhere in the picture (but if not possible not compulsory) and upload that with your log.

And finally do a little research and find another location in the world where similar basalt formations can be found and send that information to me in your email along with your measurements.
