The City of Birmingham was originally settled in 1819 by John
Hunter. It received a post office in 1821 under the name
Bloomfield, after the township. In 1836, Roswell T. Merrill
envisioned this area to have a successful industrial future and
proposed re-naming it after Birmingham England where the industrial
revolution began. Legend has it that he put "Birmingham" on a sign
over his foundry the day after a meeting of the community to decide
on a name. This name was eventually accepted and in 1838 it was
changed. It eventually incorporated into a village in 1864.
All hopes of a major industrial center were dashed in 1854 when a
large fire wiped out the foundry and several adjacent small
factories. They were never rebuilt.
By the late 1890's the local residents began to see improvements
that made Birmingham a very envious place to live. Dentists,
Doctors, Lawyers among other professionals started to set up shop.
In a ten year span from 1920 to 1930 the population had more than
doubled. This led Birmingham to become a city in 1933.
The posted coordinates will take you to a plaque that is located on
the site of his Grist Mill.
To get to the final location, you need to read this plaque and do
the math.
For the North, using the date the Grist Mill was built, take the
1st number of the year and add it to the last two(ABCD would be A +
CD). Using this answer, deduct it from the posted North
Coordinates.
For the West, take all of the numbers from the day and year that
this plaque was dedicated(AB,CDEF). Using them each as an
individual numbers, add them all together(A+B+C+D+E+F). Using this
sum, now deduct it from the posted West coordinates.
You now have all of the numbers to find the final location. Good
luck!!
