Geocache Description:

This # 5 in the series of the rebirth of commuter/transit Railroads that complements my Disappearing RR Blues Caches. This series highlights the return of the popularity of trains that move people. This one highlights MAX's Red Line to the Airport. NOTE: This cache cannot be accessed from I-205.

Welcome to the MAX Red Line. From the cache location, if you look up you will see MAX Light Rail trains soar above I-205 to enter its center median.

The Red Line was built as a public-private venture. The Developer of what is now known as Cascade Station built the line in cooperation with TriMet and Port of Portland for the development rights of what was Port's land along Airport Way.

Unfortuately the Red Line opened for service to the Airport on 9/10/2001, one day prior to the fateful day that topple the WTC in NY and damaged the Pentagon in DC. This severely slowed air travel. It also delayed development of Cascade Station. The MAX station "Cascades" did not open until a few years later.

Today, Cascade Station, which is northeast of the cache location by about 0.5 miles is quickly becoming a busy area with IKEA and many other large stores with more stores resturants and hotels being built, altough at a slower pace now with the current economy.

The Red Line starts at the baggage claim level of Portland Airport. It stops at the east and west ends of Cascade Station. It then soars over into the I-205 median for a stop at Sumner/Parkrose. It continues south diving under I205 into a single track to make a tight u-turn into Gateway Transit center. There it joins the Blue line to head downtown. Currently Red Line trains terminates at Beaverton Transit Center.

The cache itself is an easy find. For the FTF there is an unvalidate All Zone Adult Trimet Day pass. It is good on MAX, WES, Portland Streetcar and all Trimet Busses.

This cache is eligible for the Disappearing-Reappearing RR Blues Bonus Cache, GC2417R, where you need to find 18 of my RR themed caches including any Disappearing RR Blues, Reappearing RR Smiles and Oregon RR History series caches.

Enjoy!!
