Carl T. Johnson was born on June 1, 1911 to Charles Erik and Emma U. (Morin) Johnson in East Lake Michigan. The family would move to Cadillac Michigan where Carl would graduate High School. (While in high school, Carl organized the Cadillac Big Game Club). In 1929, he began his career in Cadillac as a life insurance salesman along with his brother as owner/operator of Johnson Insurance. On March 22, 1933 he would marry his wife, formerly Elsie Paddock. They would remain together until her death in 2006.
In 1936, the Cadillac Big Game Club that Carl organized while in high school would become the Cadillac (Michigan) Bear Club.
In 1942, Carl T. Johnson was sworn in as the youngest Mayor of Cadillac Michigan. He served 11 months as Mayor before enlisting in the U.S. Cavalry. He then served 2 years in England.
In 1946, Ben East, a writer for Outdoor Life magazine, contacted Carl in regards to a bear hunt that Ben experienced in Tennessee with the use of dogs. At that time, using dogs to hunt bear in Michigan was illegal. (Previous to WWII, Carl would use dogs to eliminate sheep killing bears near the Deadstream Swamp in Missaukee and Roscommon Counties). Together the two men were able to convince the Conservation Commission to allow a trial bear hunt with dogs in the Deadstream Swamp area. Soon, the hunters from Tennessee arrived with their dogs, and along with over 100 other hunters were able to prove to the skeptics that hunting bear with dogs was a successful and exciting bear hunting method. (After this hunt, Carls - Cadillac (Michigan) Bear Club became what is known today as the Michigan Bear Hunters Association Inc., in which Carl was President until 1963). Later on Ben and Carl would convince the Department of Conservation to change many Michigan laws to protect the Black bear and in turn legislation was finally enacted to make the black bear a game specie, ensuring the sport of bear hunting for generations to come.
In 1963, Michigan Governor George Romney appointed Carl to the Michigan Conservation Commission. (Later to be called the Natural Resources Commission). Carl went on to serve one of the longest tenures as Commissioner (17 years) until stepping down in 1980.
A few of Carl T. Johnsons other accomplishments are: In 1969 - American Motors recognizes Carl as one of the 10 most outstanding citizen conservationist in the United States..... In 1970 Michigan Governor William Milliken appointed Carl as first Chairman of the National Lakeshore Advisory Committee, to improve management of the lakeshores at Sleeping Bear Dunes, Pictured Rocks, and Isle Royale National Park...........In 1980 he was named as Cadillac Michigan's Citizen of the Year.........In 1982, Carl founded the Michigan Conservation Foundation.........In 1988, he would once again be named as Cadillac Michigan's Citizen of the year.......May 16,1992, the Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center was dedicated in his name.......June 17, 1998, Carl was presented a plaque from the Department of Natural Resources in honor of his land conservation efforts through the donation of developement rights to the state of Michigan.
Carl T. Johnson passed away on Sept. 1, 2008, at Mercy hospital in Cadillac Michigan. He was 97 years old. ( A book written by Carl T. Johnson about some of his hunts may be purchased at the Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Centers' Gift shop for $4.95. All proceeds stay with the center.)
