Geocache Description:

A three stage puzzle with lots of opportunities for scowling.

Co-ordinates above are dummy co-ordinates. They are of one of my frequently visited spots. When I go there, I always have to wear orange coveralls. If you look for the cache there for more than about ten seconds, you are a dummy and you could become my next roommate.

Instead: Look at The Box 4 (below). Look at the numbers. You have to think inside the boxes. Each pane of the window, has nine boxes. Your job is to arrange the numbers 1 through 9 in each pane. While you are arranging, look at the rows and at the columns. You also arrange the numbers so that 1 through 9 is in each row and in each column but only once per pane, once per row and once per column. If you try to put two of anything in the same pane, row, or column, a buzzer will go off and your clothes will begin to turn orange.

(A good starting point is the center pane. Try to figure out where the number 8 belongs in that pane. Work your way from there and the puzzle will soon be yours)

Stage Two: Wave your magic wand over the grid with all the numbers filled in and it becomes a street grid of west Wichita. Each box represents a square mile, so the grid is nine miles from north to south and nine miles from east to west. The edges of the grid are 45th Street North, Broadway, 31st Street South, and 135th Street West (Clearwater Road). You will probably want to write in the principal mile roads: they are from west to east...135th, 119th, Maize Road, Tyler Road, Ridge Road, Hoover Road, West Street, Meridian, Seneca and Broadway. From north to south, they are 45th, 37th, 29th, 21st, 13th, Central, Maple, Harry (aligning with Kellogg in the western half of the map), Pawnee, and 31st Street South. Get a phone book or a map or a full tank of virtual gas for a virtual tour of west Wichita. You will put the various local landmarks (parks, businesses, shopping centers, schools) on your grid and develop the co-ordinates for the final cache.

For instance, if Sedgwick County Park were on the southwest corner of 45th and Broadway, it would be in the northeastern most (upper right hand corner of the grid) You would use 1 as the first digit of your north co-ordinate. So it would be at 37.1xxxx 097.xxxxx. It isn't there, but you get the idea.

Two very important details:

1. IN WICHITA, THE ODD NUMBERS ARE ON THE SOUTH AND WEST SIDES OF THE STREETS. Thus the EVEN numbers are on the NORTH and the EAST sides.

2. THE CO-ORDINATES FOR THE FINAL ARE IN DD.DDDDD format. (There were zeroes in the DD MM.MMM format that most of us are used to) I think you can convert .DDDDD by multiplying by 60. My less than $100 Garmin Geko will do it in DD.DDDDD format, I bet your $500 machine will do just fine.

The final cache is your reward for this loathesome labor. It is a typical Badd Companie hide: ammo box, in the woods, a little bit swampy due to the recent rains, plentiful poison ivy, probably ticks, definitely mosquitoes, and its probably in a place you've never been before. There are lots of maples and other trees in the area. There are lots of fireflies and other less desirable insects as well. It's a Wild place so USE DEET and cover up.
