This multi is 4 parts of an orienteering course set up by Boy
Scout
Troop 182. (The full course has 12 points) This is used to
teach
the boys how to use a map and compass to find their way. For
this
course the leaders will give the boys a point to start,
headings,
and distances to the next points. If they follow their
directions
correctly they will find markers at each point and finish in
the
correct location.
Scouts use a compass to go in the correct heading. To find
their
distance they have to determine how many paces it will take them
to
go a predetermined distance. (ex. 40 paces= 100 ft.)
The coordinates given will be your starting point; there is a
pink
marker at this location. (Note: there are several of these
around
the trial for other points in the full course, but not every point
has one, some are objects.) From this point you
will go 43° 1440 ft to your next location. On an object
near
that location you will find the heading and distance to the
third
location, where you will find directions to your final location.
We
have not put all of the directions on here due to savvy GPS
users
“cheating”.
As you walk the area take a break on the wooden benches which
were
built as an Eagle Scout project by a Troop 182 Eagle Scout.
Turn
off the GPS, bring a compass, the kids, and have fun.
