This cache has been archived.

GuentherGal: I stopped by to check on this one this afternoon. Whew, is the place a mess what with all the construction and such. Goose and I went over and had a nice picnic lunch at the Sunset Savannah, that’s what it looks like about now. We did see evidence of new parking lots and improvements in the area.

From reading signs, it appears they hope to have everything back up and running within the next year. If that should happen, and the Fish Ladder remains, I’ll be happy to put another cache out here. Thanks to all who visited!

Geocache Description:

This is an easy family friendly cache located in beautiful Bridgeton City Park. There is a stretch along Mayor Aitken Drive well known for its stunning rhododendron groves. The park offers places of significant historic interest such as The Nail House Museum. Additionally, you are able to rent canoes, fish, and swim in the park as well. You will have the opportunity to visit a free zoo, hike on a nature trail, learn about fish ladders, and find a cache!

The parking waypoint given will put you at the parking lot for the Bridgeton’s Cohanzick Zoo, New Jersey’s first zoo. This is one of the last free zoos in the nation and displays more than 100 animals in modern, naturalistic exhibits. Open daily 9am - 4pm. Open till 5 during the summer. This is a lovely zoo and is great for the entire family.

Although closer parking may be available, it can be very dangerous attempting to cross the nearby roadways. The parking/trailhead coordinates will take you to a memorial marker for the Albert J. Kolonich, Jr. Nature Trail. Just cross over the covered bridge and it is a pleasant .30 hike to Sunset Lake, the fish ladder, and the cache. There are tree identification markers and environmental signs to promote public education about the ecosystem, fish, and fish migration along the trail.

The Sunset Lake Fish Ladder is an example of a baffle fishway which uses a series of symmetrical close-spaced baffles in a channel to redirect the flow of water, allowing fish to swim around the barrier. . Most fishways enable fish to pass around the barriers by swimming and leaping up a series of relatively low steps (hence the term ladder) into the waters on the other side. The velocity of water falling over the steps has to be great enough to attract the fish to the ladder, but it cannot be so great that it washes fish back downstream or exhausts them to the point of inability to continue their journey upriver.

When you reach the fish ladder take the trail along the fence which is just a short distance from the cache. The camouflaged small Lock & Lock container is located 40 feet off the small trail.

There are several other nice caches in the area so be sure to check them out as well. Make it a fun day!
