Geocache Description:

Signal point used to be an interpretative centre overlooking the Goolwa wharf and Hindmarsh Island. The whole centre is now leased to a local winery who have set up a cafe and wine tasting area and display for Goolwa Cittaslow. There are plans to have a cooking school here in the future. There is no need to touch the garden or the rockery.

Signal point

You are looking for an eclipse tin with a magnet. There is no need to touch the garden or the rockery.
It contains a log book and pencil
Beware of muggles

The destinctive shape of the roof and tall signal mast are no longer on the roof at Signal Point. It was removed and a new flatter box-shaped roof was installed (which looks tacky). History of Signal Point was previously an interpretative centre where you could explore the story of the Murray-Darling river system from its headwaters in the mountains to the end of its journey at the Southern Ocean.

You could learn why weirs and barrages were built and how they have affected navigation and irrigation along the Murray river system. Goolwa's importance as river boat port in the 1880's was shown with the importance of the paddlesteamers and how they performed a vital transport link between stations and farms of inland Australia.

The area around the mast in the middle of the Interpretive Centre used to incorporate the mounting of the old Signal Mast which was in use before radio communications. The mast used a series of flags to let mariners know the conditions at the Murray Mouth.
