Bring water and a snack, this isn’t your average woodsy stroll. Extra GPS batteries, a compass, topo map are encouraged. Waterproof boots may be a good idea depending on the weather.
Welcome to the LaBarque Walkabout Trilogy. Finding these caches will take you to some of the jewels of this small nature preserve. These 335 hilly acres of Ozark borderlands contain the largest known St. Peter’s sandstone glade. There are 3 separate canyons with intermittent streams, cliffs, waterfalls, bowls, and overhangs. There are also some amazing patches of moss and lichen so please tread softly. Optimal times to visit this area are during the fall or winter, either just after a good rain or when everything is frozen. For the summer hikers, wear your sandals and walk La Barque Creek to the mouth of the creek leading to the cache. The water is spring fed and cool.
There is a new trail that will take you to both Hole in the Rock and to Rocky Top. The Conservation Department is doing some ecological restoration of some of the glades and savannas. This is unfortunate for Slab Rock Canyon that was surrounded by a very large grove of cedar trees. These have now been cut down and left where they lay. This makes it difficult to now get to the cache. Coming up from the West is the best way to that one.
If you notice a geotrail forming please don't contribute to it, take another route to the cache. If a trail does form, please advise us and we will relocate the cache. This is a nature PRESERVE, please treat it with respect. Thanks and have a great hike.
