At midnight on 1st May 2000, the US
Government turned off GPS selective availability. This meant that
recreational GPS receivers became accurate to about 10 metres. Two
days later on 3rd May 2000, Dave Ulmer hid the first "stash" just
outside Portland in Oregon and published the location on an
internet forum. It was found the very next day.
So that makes this weekend the 10th
anniversary of Geocaching, and to commemorate it Groundspeak are
giving all event caches that celebrate the anniversary a new and
one off icon.
The first event cache in Scotland was
You'll have had your tea? -
Scotland's Cache Bash hosted by Pooter & Silver Fox.
Given that this was the first event in Scotland I thought it would
be appropriate for this anniversary event to be held in the exact
same location at the Riccarton Arms, Currie, Edinburgh.
The Video:
The video has now been edited and uploaded
and can be viewed on YouTube & Facebook and if you are logged onto Facebook you can
view it here and leave any comments you
wish.
When:
Sunday 2nd May 2010
Where:
The Riccarton Arms, Currie, at
the above co-ordinates.
The landlord will be reserving the dining area which holds 20-30
people, if it gets full it’s not a problem as we can spill
out into the bar area.
Children are welcome.
The car park is to the rear of the
pub.
Time:
From 1:00 p.m. for a couple of
hours.
Details:
To get the special icon, Groundspeak have
laid down a few rules for the event.
'A video or picture must be taken at
the event. At least 10 attendees must be in the video/photo along
with a legible sign showing the event coordinates and location
name.'
At approximately 1:30pm we shall do a
group picture outside, so please try your best to be there for
this.
If all goes to plan, I will be going
around with the camera doing live interviews, so be prepared for
questions, don’t worry if you make any mistakes, anything
funny can be done as a blooper real at the end.
'The people in the video or photo
should be festive. Be inventive! But please keep it family
friendly.'
As St Andrews Day, Hogmanay and
Burn’s Night are distant memories now, we thought that it
would be good to drag your Scottish items out of their hiding
places and take them to this event. Please come either wearing
something Scottish (doesn’t need to be a kilt –
something tartan or a Tam O’Shanter would be fine!) or take a
Scottish flag with you. A thistle or a posy of heather would do
too!
Food:
The Riccarton Arms serves food from
12:30pm onwards. If you wish to eat it has a standard bar menu with
light snacks as well as full meals. Please take note that if they
are busy you may have to wait a short while for your food to
arrive.
Disabled Access:
Disabled access is gained through the rear
door, from the car park and through the beer garden.
It would be great if you could come and
join us for a while this afternoon, and raise a glass to Dave
Ulmer, who set that very first cache a decade ago. Imagine –
one cache in all the world this time 10 years ago – now there
are over one million!
Keep an eye on this listing, as changes
may be made, I will post a note on here each time I make any
significant changes.
