Within the Harold Johnson Nature reserve are two historical
monuments dating back to the Anglo-Zulu wars. On a hill overlooking
the the Tugela is the site of Fort Pearson. The unrest resulting
from the power struggle for succession when Cetshwayo defeated and
killed his brother Mbulazi caused a nervous Natal government to
build seven forts along the Tugela to protect their northern
border. One of these, Fort Williamson, was replaced by Fort
Pearson. It was from here that the British marched into Zululand at
the start of the Anglo-Zulu war.
Today, little remains of Fort Pearson apart from the outer
trenches. There is a small picnic area, a stone cairn, various
plaques and some naval graves.
To get to Fort Pearson and The Ultimatum Tree.
There are two ways; a)Obtain a key at Harold Johnson or b)Hike
about one kilometre total.
a)First get the Fort Pearson Gate Key (Refundable deposit of R20
for the key) at Harold Johnson Nature reserve Reception.
Co-Ordinates for Reception are S29 12.388 E31 25.311. (If Patricia
is not at reception try her at the no-entry turn off just before
the reception building.) Note the visiting time is from 7.30am
to 3.30pm
Go back to main dirt road and turn left to Fort Pearson.
You will find Fort Pearson gate on your left.
b)Park at the Ultimatum Tree and hike back to Fort Pearson over the
highway using a pedestrian bridge. This option you do not need the
key for the gate, but the hike is about 500m longer.
The published Co-Ords will bring you to British war graves. To work
out the final Co-Ords you must find the grave for Arthur T
Reynolds.
