This is an extremely rugged area but very beautiful. It is located in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest by Goose lake. No trails. This area is surrounded by lava flows. Altitude is around 4000'.
This cache was originally named "GP Crater Insanity" placed by TurkeyVulture and Pronghorne on June 21st 2003. Unfortunately raided and destroyed by what we believe were hunters. We loved and enjoyed this area so much that we wanted to reestablish this cache as a "revenge". Please, before you leave the house, come prepared. This is not a cache you can take a bottle of water in one hand and GPS in the other. Bring sufficient amounts of water and bring energy snacks, you will burn calories! Pack an additional GPS and extra batteries. Be sure to have a good compass, although lava can have a tendency to throw off readings. Just be patient. Clothing items should include hiking boots, gloves for climbing in and out of lava beds and long sleeves and pants to protect from scratchy forest underbrush. Pack a flashlight or head lamp, just in case you get caught out in the dark. Be prepared (at least mentally) to spend a night in the woods. Note that, this terrain in rated a 4 1/2 for a good reason. We have established another cache called "Waypoint to Insanity" to aid you along to this cache. This will help you more easily cross what could be a difficult section. Coordinates are N 45 54.628, W 121 45.207.
Round trip to this cache including "Waypoint to Insanity" is 6+ hours. If you have some extra time add "Lava Bed II" into your day.
Remnants of the original cache are dead center of the crater.(N 45 54.626, W 121 45.215) You can not miss it! When you do locate our new cache box, please hide it as well and as naturally as you found it to avoid another loss of this cache. Good luck , have fun!
