Pigeons are a major problem for urban areas. There are around 400 million pigeons across the globe, one million of which live in New York City alone. According to a 2016 New York Times article entitled "Pigeon Wars" a single pigeon can produce up to 25 pounds of excrement a year. The damage done to U.S. cities each year by this pigeon poop totals around 1.1 billion dollars!
While many cities over the years have attempted to curb pigeon populations by pigeon-proofing rooftops and killing pigeons, some are now trying new approaches where they encourage the birds to nest in large pigeon houses. When the pigeons lay eggs they are removed and replaced with fake eggs.
