Geocache Description:

An ancient stone circle.

br>
Castlerigg Stone Circle is one of the most spectacular locations in Cumbria. Set on a flat plain the site is surrounded by a number of imposing fells including Skiddaw, Blencathra, Lonscale Fell and Clough Head. The circle today consists of 38 stones with a diameter of around 30 metres, although there is some speculation that there may have been as many as 41. The circle has been tentatively dated at 3200 BC however this is a matter of some debate as are most of the theories as to the purpose of the stones.

Today the site is one of the most popular locations in Cumbria with thousands of visitors every year. The stones are particularly popular on the Summer Solstice when locals and visitors alike gather to welcome the rising of the sun!

Because of the high number of visitors in the area there is a constant risk of being spotted by muggles, this should add to the fun! Please note that the stones are an ancient monument and are owned by the National Trust, the cache is not hidden anywhere near the stones, please treat them with respect.

The cache is a screw top pill holder with the Geocaching logo, please be careful with the insert - it's quite fiddly, don't let it blow away!!! Note that the cache is securely attached to something, it is possible to unscrew the base without disturbing the cap or the thing it is attached to. Please seal the container tightly when you have finished.

The best time to visit is at either sunrise or sunset when the views are at their most awe inspiring. There is parking within 100 metres of the stones and this cache is suitable for young families and wheelchair users although the ground may be muddy after heavy rain. Note that the field often contains livestock so dogs should be kept under close control.
