Geocache Description:

Small cache near one of the prettiest lakes in the TWRA system.

UPDATE AS OF 12/20/08: Several people have had trouble finding this cache. It is in place and the coords are accurate. Remember that the container is camo'd so it will not be readily apparent.

Glenn Springs Lake is a 310 acre lake in Tipton County, Tennessee. It is surrounded by a beautiful forest which is home to a wide variety of plant and animal life. This is one of the nicest lakes overseen by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency.

At one time apparently a Boy Scout troop developed a trail around at least part of the lake. Unfortunately the trail has not been maintained. You can still find the trail head fairly easily but after about 0.2 mile it is virtually impossible to locate the trail in the woods.

You are looking for a camouflaged container that is about the size of a decon container. It contains a few small trade items and a log. Bring your own pen/pencil. Please be careful WHEN CLOSING THE CONTAINER TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU CLOSE IT TIGHTLY (SNAPS SHUT) so that it remains waterproof.

There are several ways to approach this cache. First, you can take the old trail until it runs out and bushwhack the remainder of the way. This way will cause you to walk a bit more than 1/10 mile. Or you can bushwhack straight from the trail head which reduces the distance to less than 400 feet but causes you to walk through dense woods. Or you can rent a boat and paddles (which are likely to cost about $15 total) and row across the lake to the cache which reduces your walking distance to about 75 ft. (of course, there is paddling distance to take into account plus the cost of the boat). Or you can bring your own boat. Swimming is not allowed and this is strictly enforced (do not attempt to swim)! IF YOU USE ANY BOAT YOU WILL NEED a valid TN fishing license, some type of fishing equipment, and floatation device according to TWRA rules (I don't make the rules, I just report them)!

Remember that this is primarily a fishing lake. Please do not do anything to disturb those folks fishing in the area.

The woods are full of poison ivy so beware. In addition, there are the usual things you would expect to find in a wooded area near a lake: mosquitos; ticks; snakes; mud; and critters.

The woods will cause havoc with your GPSr. I took readings using both a Garmin 60CSx and a Garmin Etrex Legend. The posted coordinates are the best I could come up with and definitely are the ones I would use to hunt this cache if I were doing so. However, I have to tell you that when I took numerous readings my north coordinate fluctuated from 634 to 638 while my west coordinate fluctuated from 827 to 837. Hope this helps.

Thanks to Sprout for beta testing this one for me. Have fun finding it!
