The listed coordinates are for one of the more unique branches
of the New York Public Library, the Ottendorfer library. It opened
in 1884 as New York City's first free public library. The Branch
was a gift of Oswald Ottendorfer, owner of the New-Yorker
Staats-Zeitung. At the time, the neighborhood was called
Kleindeutschland (Little Germany) and had a population of over
150,000 people of German descent. Ottendorfer wished to provide
this community with books to cultivate their minds and assist
assimilation into American culture. Half of the 8,000 original
books were in German with the other half in English. In the same
tradition, the branch continues to reflect its community and
remains a vital educational and cultural resource for the East
Village today. We've spent so much time at various NY Public
Libraries, they all feel like home to us.
Here's the puzzle:
Not sure if the difficulty rating is fair, some
folks may find this easier than others. Some of us find number
games entertaining, others are more suited to recognizing the
difference between a Sycamore and a London Plane tree. We got a
little lazy with this one, we may not have dotted all our 'i"s and
crossed our "x"'s fully, we made the container ourselves out of
some things in the junk box (don't forget your tweezers), but we're
pretty sure it will all add up in the end.
