Under the Waterfall Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

Lotus: Retrieved stage 2 container; retiring cache. I was unable to find stage 1. Tried to find a spot to relocate stage 2 (beyond the waterfall, etc), but couldn't find a spot with a good "view" of the waterfall. I might try again this year since I kind of hate to retire this cache - obviously, though, a stage under the waterfall doesn't work very well [:D].

Geocache Description:

Expect to get a workout on this cache if you follow my suggested path. I have made this ½ mile round-trip journey several times, and each time I was worn out by the time I returned to my car. There is nothing individually difficult about the terrain, but I’ve given it a high rating so no one is caught off guard.

The suggested trail head and parking is available at N32° 47.702’ W097° 24.776’. From these starting coordinates you will proceed down the side of the hill along the obvious path and eventually you will reach a steep rocky slope. I usually walk down the rocks, but the footing is extremely unstable and I request that you exercise caution. In the middle of the rocky path, you will see a fork in the road. Feel free to take either path as both routes merge again in less than 250 feet.

Once you reach the base of the hill, you will arrive at what appears to be a dirt road (N32° 47.570’ W097° 24.775’). I suggest heading left along this dirt road until you see a walking trail veer off to the right (less than 250 feet away). Following this trail will require a small leap across a ravine, but the route will take you along the shore of the stream and give you a beautiful view of the waterfall. Continue following this trail until you reach the right-hand side of the waterfall (N32° 47.508’ W097° 24.768’).

After climbing up from this side of the waterfall you should see some stepping stones that will allow you to cross the stream(or you can swim across the stream at the base of the waterfall if you brought your swimsuit). After crossing the stream, I recommend you approach the coordinates from below instead of above. It shouldn’t be difficult to find an easy approach.

Once at the location, remember the name of the cache (although water may not necessarily be flowing over this specific spot when you visit). You should find a sub-micro nano-size container behind a rock in a crevice. Beware of any kids playing in the stream; you may have to be extremely nonchalant during the excavation ;).

Once you have coordinates proceed back up the path to the cache destination. The cache itself is an ammo box hidden under a small tree.

Side Notes:

  • I don’t recommend visiting this cache during or shortly after a heavy rain. As with any stream, the current could be more powerful than it looks; however, every time I have visited this location, I easily crossed the stream.
  • When navigating the final 25 feet of the first leg, I recommend removing your shoes (unless you want them to get wet). At the time I placed the cache, the water was up to my ankles…and pleasantly warm =).
