September 25, 2009 by TigrePlus (2715 found) 20090925 16:00 12°C Ensoleillé Quelle belle aventure pour cette cache.

August 1, 2009 by GPComd (1476 found) This will definitely be a cache I'll remember for a long time. Sigspig solved the puzzle without any help from me at all. I still have no schmick about the solution method. He had the coords and wanted to do it, so off we went down the trail. Boots got wet pretty quickly, which turned out to be a good thing, when we got to the swamp/lake. No point in trying to Timmy-whimp the 'dry' way across it. Just sploosh sploosh past the knees all the way. Got the tag, off again. Had to wait for Sigs to empty out his gum rubbers. Hip waders might get you through this one dry, but there's a lot of walking involved. Get to the final location, and spend at least 20 minutes imitating various members of the primate family as we search. But after this long of a hunt, we're not quitting no matter what. Sigs fell into the river up to his armpit, that was good for a laugh, but it didn't help find the cache. It did take out his cellphone, so the phone-a-friend option disappeared. Sigs finally spotted it in the water, and it took the two of us working from different angles to extract it. I replaced the cache to where I thought it should have been, in a more flood resistant location. This one has definitely been the highlight of all the caches I've done since moving to Orleans this year."Were there any bugs?", you might ask. Well, does a one-legged duck swim in circles? GPC

August 1, 2009 by SigsPig (1447 found) Finally! One of the few land based caches in the Orleans area is finished. I'm not quite sure how long I've worked on this or how many emails to the cache owner I've send but I'm sure to have the market cornered. I tried getting my musically inclined niece & newphew to listen to the mp3 to the reply of "Are you #$%@ crazy; how can I get notes out of that". Scratch the family help angle. Mention to 5Davee that I'm having more than my fair shape of trouble & that the suggested program won't load on my 2k machine. He mentions another program but that didn't help. Another avenue closed. Then, a break thru. I realized that another caching partner was well versed in music. Fire off another email to the cache owner only to find out that our answer was correct but octaves were off Armed with the updated information, today turned out to be the day. With GPC in tow (thankfully), we parked at the recommended spot & proceeded in. Gunner definitely got a work out chasing frogs & snakes, not to mention the odd bit of swimming. This is definitely a cache to do with a partner; if for no other reason that safety. At least for another few weeks. I almost got impaled on some beaver sticks. Both GPC & I ended up soaked from toes to tail. Cellphone is now drying out in the rice bag Not sure if the previous finders were over zealous in re-hiding the cache or not but it took both of us almost 20 minutes till I noticed something. Then it took another 5 minutes to retrieve. Tags are in great shape. Container is dry & there's lots of room in the logbook for the next finders. Not sure where the original cache location was so GPC replaced in a definite 'flood free' zone T - shoe horn L - beannie baby toy & retractable lanyard Thanks for a heck of an adventure; this will definitely live long in the geocaching memory bank.

After a not too wet walk to ground zero, we searched for a good 10-15 minutes. July 13, 2009 by narcissa (1219 found) Glad to see you updated the page to reflect the changes.I should note that I do much of my caching with a 40 lb kid who needs to ride on my shoulders over the rougher terrain, so I'm sensitive about terrain rating. :-) Looking back on the experience a couple of days later, I have to say that I am quite pleased to be among the relatively few cachers who have solved and found this one.

July 10, 2009 by Taoiseach (1451 found) This is perhaps the one puzzle that I knew that I would never be able to solve. When Narcissa said that she had managed to solve it, I naturally couldn't pass up my one opportunity! As the day passed on, I just kept on thinking about finally being able to grab this one. When the end of the work day came, Narcissa picked me up from the The Home Depot, and we then drove half way across the city. We started down the familiar trail, and as soon as we made an all important turn, we walked into a cloud of mosquitoes! The walk really is uninteresting, so we'll skip ahead in the story to our arrival at the first tag. Once we got there, it took us a while to find anything. When we finally did, it didn't help us! We found something that clearly indicated that it was a part of the cache, however the tag had a large bite out of it and was covered in blood! At this point, we had to phone a friend for a little bit of help. Said phone-a-friend was able to give us adequate advice, and we were soon off to the second tag. It was at this second tag that Narcissa's now late Magellan started doing bizarre things. Fortunately my Garlic Garmin was still working, and was able to guide us to both the second tag and the final. Once at the final GZ, finding thew cache was anything but easy. For the sake that it's a biog-honkin' lock & lock, it is incredibly well hidden! The sneaky hide was made all the more difficult by the fact that my waypoint was off by just enough that I feared getting wet in retrieving the cache. These are not difficulties that you want to have when searching in an area where the vampire threat level is always at red! Once we finally found the cache, we quickly signed the log, and fled back to the car. Narcissa wanted to take a more direct route, but I advised against it. We were lucky to make it out of there with our find, and only losing blood to the micro-vampires that were flying around everywhere! Found - 7:55 PM TNLN - TFTC!

July 10, 2009 by narcissa (1219 found) Found this with Taoiseach. I enjoyed solving the puzzle, but found the actual hunt frustrating. The cache page indicates that there's a single re-direct but there are, in fact, two. Taoiseach and I ascertained this through a phone conversation with model12 while in the field. At the first waypoint, we only ever found the original, broken redirect, and had to get the next set of coordinates over the phone. The second redirect was easy to find. The other frustrating part was the terrain - definitely not my idea of a terrain 2.Anyway, it's a neat idea for a cache and the puzzle is a challenge (even with some music background). I just wish the cache page was more accurate - it's not every cacher who has model12 on speed dial! Future finders note: you're looking for TWO redirects and then a cache!

January 27, 2008 by cron (3544 found) #1931 27-01-2008 14h12What another adventure! My ear is *far* from being musical... So, I had to rely on Barbadel's excellent ear to decode the tag location. It's been a while that we talked about doing that cache, but we never happened to have the time. I convinced him to go this afternoon, so we headed up for that one first. Argh. The redirect was quickly found (although Barbadel was turned off by the broken redirect). Once we had the good information in hands, we went for the cache. Now the troubles began. Was the cache winter friendly? We couldn't remember and the Blackberry didn't give the answer. But there was only one place it could be, so we broke the ice around the structure (about a few inches thick) until we could see under. I then noticed something coming out of the water/ice. Could it be the tusk?!? We carefully broke the thin ice on the ground and the tusk was freed from its prison. Alas, all is wet (as in water in the bags). We couldn't sign the any of the logbooks, which were half frozen, half wet. We left the cache above the water, just besides the structure and we put some ice/snow to cover it. TNLN and obviously didn't sign the log.

September 27, 2007 by 5davee (2433 found) Wow! That was a great puzzle! Very challenging (especially since I'm musically impaired) and very rewarding when you finally solve it.I needed the help of my sons, g0blin and Henevebuh, to solve this one. g0blin helped me find the appropriate software and Henevebuh has an ear for music. Unfortunately, the shareware piano program mentioned in the cache description doesn't work on Microsoft Vista, but g0blin suggested that I try another shareware program called Audacity that lets you manipulate MP3 files. I pulled apart and reconstituted the MP3 and then Henevebuh helped me identify the mystery notes. He was dead on. The cache need a bit of maintenance. The copper tag is almost unreadable, and the cache is leaking. There was very little water in the cache container, but that is only because the log books are working as a sponge. Regardless, I *really* enjoyed this mystery cache. Thanks for another great puzzle, Zartimus TNLNSL TFTC(!)

May 22, 2007 by Bicycleman (679 found) Third time lucky. Just a case of the container not being winter friendly when there is ice on the ground. The ice rings around the tree trunks show the ice was over 24 inches high which obviously can hide a lot of stuff. Great day for a hike. Trails are 99% dry amd only one mosquito attacked me on the there and back. Originally thought that the Cliffy tube was the greatest invention since sliced bread - but learned that it is probably the worst type of container in terms of keeping interior goodies dry. Too air tight and the varying temperatures create condensation which is amplified when goods are inside plastic bags. Instead of banning them I would suggest having just a laminated codeword that the finder would report to the cache owner before the find is logged. Lastly unless it is a waterproof item, trades would be discouraged. Having said that, I signed a soggy log book - why there are 2 I'm not sure. I took a small clock that had gone mouldy and left nothing. Next finder could bring some plastic baggies and maybe some paper towel to dry the goods better than the 10 minutes I gave it in the sun. April 2, 2007 by Bicycleman (679 found) GeoSamm and I tried again today thinking the ice would have receded. Well, it's like another world there - still lots of ice and some snow which GeoSamm loves to roll in. Got to pick your trail in as I broke through the ice at one point and got a soaker. At GZ the ice had dropped significantly from around the trees to permit scrutiny but still no jackpot. Maybe it floated away when the area flooded in the fall.
View This Log |
February 12, 2007 by Bicycleman (679 found) I am musically challenged so solving this one by listening was out of the question. Since fall, I have visited the area looking for the tusk or redirect. The trails have been barely walkable, seriously flooded, a skating rink and now skiable.I have good and bad news to report. The good news is that I found the redirect using powers of observation when comparing the photo of the copper tag and the real-time area - a rather large area I might add. It was great skiing and GeoSamm loved the area although the wind off the river can bite. The bad news is that there is 10 - 12 inches of ice around each tree in the GZ zone. As suggested in other logs, it was not exactly at GZ; so I expanded my search to no avail. Although others have found it in winter; it is not jumping out at me if it is vertically placed even with the little snow cover we have had. As this cache was placed before the 'Winter Friendly' desigation, I am unsure how WF it is. Does this mean I will have to come back in the kayak to retireve it in the spring?

June 10, 2006 by Kirok (1442 found) #226 - Scratched the last (active) Zartimus cache of my list today, finally! Since my musical knowledge starts and ends at eighties hair bands, my ear for music is not exactly a finely tuned instrument. Thankfully, Zartimus provided just enough clues in the cache page to get me started, and after what seemed like an eternity one night last winter, I decoded the coordinates with a few trusty pieces of software. Our first attempt to find this one was thwarted at the end of April. The water level was so high that 150 meters out from the tag, the entire path was under the overflowing Ottawa river. We returned today to a much dryer path and made it to within 30 meters before we hit water again. My wife decided to stay behind as I braved the murky depths and made my way to the first WP. Relieved to find the tag and finally confirm that my note decoding had gone well, I turned to leave when I was confronted with a mighty angry tusked creature! He seemed ready to attack as he took on a kung-fu like pose and headed towards me. Knowing I was doomed, I wanted some proof of the creature's existence to survive me, so I reached for my camera and quickly snapped a picture. Luckily, the flash from the camera startled the beast and caused him to stop his attack and stick his head in the ground to cower. I returned to the trail to my waiting wife and described my encounter, then we headed off to the cache site. We arrived at ground zero to find mountains of crud the receding water had left behind. The sheer amount of it indicated that this has been going on for years. We searched ground zero for a while and then decided to expand our search a bit to negate the X factor of my new GPSr. Sure enough, only a few meters off we found the cache in surprisingly good condition. While there was some water in the container, the baggies did their job of keeping everything dry. The log book is minutely damp, but nothing to prevent me from signing in even with a pointy pencil. TLNLSL. Thanks for another fun one Zartimus.

November 17, 2005 by dedale (1749 found) As PMassi pointed out, I already had the coordinates but because of work and travels I had trouble finding the time to complete this one. On the positive side, I did a few caches outside the country, and more are to come. The guitar I found at TE2492 indeed gave me some inspiration on how solving Ionian Tusk; my ear is not that good, especially with distorted electrical guitars. But one of my first job 20 years ago was to design a personal computer peripheral system that measured the frequency of people singing in a microphone and display the notes on the computer screen. Today this seems archaic but this system was using some dedicated hardware a “very powerful” Z80 with not more than 16K of memory (64K was too expensive), and all the onboard code was in assembler. Technologies have changed but the methods and algorithms are still the same today. Therefore armed with the tools I know: digital signal processing, Fourier analysis, Power Spectrum, and Cepstrum, I extracted the 14 notes in the digital signal, computed the frequency spectrum, extracted the principal harmonics and found the exact notes. The results had to be right… Thanks Zartimus, this was a fun cache that brought me back good souvenirs. A final tip, you may want to tune your guitar… just joking I only measured 6 cents deviation.

October 21, 2005 by The Burrow (3566 found) #782 Having read the story of the tusk and independently worked out the musical clue with similar results, Pmassi and I headed out after work today in search of this mysterious talisman. I know, I know, we were taking a chance in beginning the hunt so close to All Hallows Eve, but the prize for success would be worth it. We enjoy night caching as much as the next person, but to be able to go out in broad daylight!! We left our trusty white shadow at the recommended parking, and cautiously began our trek in to the last known site of the tusk. After finding a small golden scroll attached to a tree with a further clue/warning, we continued on our quest for the much coveted tusk. Working our way through the treaturous badlands, our hard work finally paid of when we unearthed "THE IONIAN TUSK OF THE DAYWALKER". We were only too glad that we did not have to engage "The Creature" in battle. Finding the tusk virtually overflowing with marrow, we quickly extracted as much as we could, leaving the tusk, shall we say "dry as a bone". In place of the marrow, we left some other small treasures in fresh baggies. These may not help you get around in the daylight, but then again, immortality isn't for just anyone you know ;). Thanks, Zaritmus, for a fun cache.

The ducks swimming in the trails were laughing at me I think. From the debris and vegetation, it's easy to tell that the water level was much higher a few weeks ago. I hope the cache is not in a position were the current could carry it away. Anyway, I guess I'll make it there some day, say at the end of summer, when water levels are low...

March 5, 2005 by The red-haired witch (2077 found) Oh well, guess I'll have to keep the log book till the snow melts.Should have figured all would not go well today when I got stuck in traffic for an hour on a Saturday morning. Got the notes from Bluelamb (thanks again!) since I can only figure notes when they are written down, not heard. Guessed a few sets of possible coordinates, found the tag easily at my first try... then it went wrong. I searched for an hour for the tusk before giving up when too many dog walkers started to pass by, with no time to search in between. Considering the last logs said it was an easy find, I suspect the extra snow from last week has covered the cache. Carefull if you go search for it, many pieces of wood with nails, apparently what's left of a picnic table.

January 18, 2005 by bluelamb03 (6537 found) Bagged this one at 1530 hrs, but this was a multi-day effort! On Sunday Argus Alverde and I sat at the table after dinner with a laptop and a guitar and picked our way through the melody. The piano shareware that the cache page links to was very useful! Argus Alverde has a good ear and lots of patience so we had the decryption in hand fairly quickly. Thanks Argus!Today was sunny and brisk! A classic Ottawa winter's day so off I went down the trails. The tag was an easy find, and the cache was easier, but I did have to 'excavate' to get to it. Once again I brought my trusty ice-scraper and had the 'tusk' dug out in no time! The contents were in pretty good condition, but had obviously been wet at the start of winter because the logbook was frozen solid! I placed a new logbook in the cache and 'rescued' the log for a little TLC. I left the "Inspector Clouseau" TB and a little black bear behind and took with me the "Ello Ello Ello" TB for some crime solving in Ottawa, and a sleeping bag carrier that was hogging all the space. Thanks Zartimus for another inventive and challenging cache, and thanks too to Argus Alverde for sharing his musical talent with a tone deaf geocacher! Cheers, Bluelamb03

Then I found the tree and the tag (going there the hard way, through swamp and high grass). Then I came to that gloomy depressive place, spent an hour trying to find the Tusk, scared local frogs and snakes to death, excited mosquitoes, scratched my leg - and finally left disappointed. Going to try it one more time.

This British detective sure has a nose for mysterious crime scenes, and we found the cache more or less immediately upon arrival safely tucked away in its (presumably) normal location, *exactly* at the indicated coordinates from the tree tag. Contents were very very wet, and the baggies were doing their usual great job of holding water inside. We drained what could be drained, but the log book and other cache items are still very very wet. CACHE NEEDS MAINTANENCE! After signing the log and a quick photo session, Ello Ello Ello (the TB) volunteered to stay behind and guard things until the next finder shows up -- perhaps the criminal will return the the scene of the crime, ya know! Got to the same place as last time, and found a huge chunk of a wharf/dock there, but no tusk. The entire area will be under water within a week as the ice melts away. Access today involved two knee-high soakers. Not likely that this cache (if it's still there) would be accessible before August or so.. Cheers

March 19, 2004 by mlord (1172 found) Sjs & I finally got out to look for this cache today -- we've had the coordinates for several months now, just needed the motive and opportunity.Found the tree, the old and new tags, but no Tusk. Perhaps it has fallen and is currently encased in the 8-12 inches of ice that seems to be everywhere in the vicinity? Cheers

June 22, 2003 by Zartimus (413 found) Went out this afternoon and got sucked dry - by mosqitoes! Man, there must have been a mosquito aircraft carrier nearby! In any case, I placed a coppper tag on the same tree that used to contain the original marker. I left it's remains in place if it's any help in spotting the new tag. And, as JulesD said, the coffin appears to be gonzo! Darn vampire slayers!

June 12, 2003 by julesd (426 found) Got the coordinates of the smashed marker from Zartimus, and went back today to find the cache. Came prepared with DEET this time so those blood suckers weren't a problem. Got to the cache coordinates and found the cache in no time. Turns out we were really close the first time but were driven away by all the mosquitos before finding it. Cache was dry and in excellent condition. Thanks for the great cache! Jules.

June 8, 2003 by julesd (426 found) I myself have no musical ability whatsoever, but I managed to get one of my friends to listen to the secret melody and figure out the coordinates of the waypoint marker. Unfortunately, when we got there, we found that the marker is broken and the coordinates mostly obliterated. Perhaps Buffy or some other vampire slayer is trying to make sure Nicodemus never again walks in the daylight. We took our best guess at the missing numbers but were unable to find the tusk. I'll e-mail a photo of the waypoint marker so you can see for yourself.Jules.

January 5, 2003 by SouthCentral (47 found) Went with 'the man who didn't want a nickname' and Khanya to find the tusk. With 'the man who didn't want a nickname' using Khanya's GPSr and leading we found the tusk marker with relative ease. We then proceeded quickly and DIRECTLY (through fields of snow) to the co-ordinates found on the marker and began searching high and low for the tusk. (Why would we follow the paths? Everyone knows the shortest distance between two points is a straight line...)Finally found the cache. Traded a two piece Kinder Surpise toy (man on cell phone in a truck with a briefcase) for the level. Also left a snow angel on the nearby ice, which may be difficult to take. The halo cannot be borrowed. Nothing out of the ordinary to report, however we did spot a white car which got me thinking about the white limo I saw when searching for the Message to Sparta cache. Thanks Zartimus for reminding me again why I didn't go further in music.

December 18, 2002 by Khanya (59 found) This is definitely one of the fun ones to do. Enjoyed listening to your music (that's fantastic improvisation!) and learning about your past rockstar life. The cache itself was a piece of art - extremely creative. Thanks for a fun nite out in the woods and the movie afterwards. Looking forward to more of your caches! :)

December 17, 2002 by Tripper (1203 found) (GC#134) Picked up Khanya and met Zartimus at the parking spot (he loves watching others stumble around his geocaches - kinda like live beta-testing). Khanya managed to solve the mystery music on her own while I enlisted the help of a musically gifted methodologist (MGM for short?). Anyhow, we packed up and headed down the trail in search of a coffin. After trying the coffin on for size (I always wanted to do that ) we headed off to test out our musical coords . It was at this point that I had to dig out the flashlight - isn't moonlight and snow great on night raids? We found the rusted tree marker with no problem and quickly zeroed in the on the Tusk. By this time it was getting bone-chilling cold and the thoughts of the lurking vampire on our trail were starting to creep us out (although, OUR lurking vampire tending more towards chuckling than anything scary-like). After a few minutes of searching around the locale we finally found the infamous Tusk of the Daywalker. It was BIG and it was CREEPY. I am glad it wasn't still attached to that evil looking beast in the pics. Signed the log, took some pics, made some trades. Then headed out for some coffee, donuts and multi-grained bagels with herb and garlic cream cheese (garlic to keep the vampires away, coffee to help keep us up for the pre-premiere showing of The Two Towers ). Thanks again Zart, Tripper

December 14, 2002 by pepperway (371 found) After listening to the haunting music of this cache page, I got my keyboard out and followed the music. My brother is even more musically inclined, so I told him to have a listen as well. We both understood what to do with this one, so it was appropriate that he and his daughter join us on this day of cache hunting. The re-direct was one of the best I have seen, given my eyes , and my thanks for that. The cache was found shortly afterwards in an expected location. Thanks for the cool concept and cache container. Chris, Kim and the T and T kids

December 10, 2002 by binthair (615 found) Hey guys, it wasn't me who left that yellow marker. I asked Sunny the Wonderdog and he said it wasn't him either. That only leaves...The Daywalker! Whoever comes next, be afraid...BE VERY AFRAID!Cheers! binthair (and much relieved!)

December 10, 2002 by Zartimus (413 found) >someone left piece of expando foam and urinated >about 2 meters from the actual cache Must have been Binthair marking his territory. In placing this cache I was there about 2 months before and left a white cache tube in place to see if anyone would frig with it. It was still there undisturbed when I went back so I thought it was pretty safe, and I did try to camouflage the area a tad with the surrounding brush. I think that styrofoam (if we're talking about the same thing) has been there a long time is kind of attached. If you ever go back in the summer you'l see all kinds of weird stuff that has washed up near there over the years.

December 10, 2002 by The Two Navigators (557 found) Wow I can't believe we actually found it. That tag sure does blend in and it does not help when there about 999 hiding spots in the area. Just as we gave up and we were walking out we spotted the tag and we were off to the cache but when we got there we were sure that it was stolen because someone left piece of expando foam and urinated about 2 meters from the actual cache but thankfully the cache was still there. We have to give thanks to our friend Evan who helped out with the musical part.

December 7, 2002 by Zartimus (413 found) Way to go Binthair! I should have known. I'm glad a crafty self-proclaimed non-musician found it as it just goes to show that music is in all of us! >PS:Zart...er... Nic sure has changed (according to the pic) The term starving artist was a very true one. I switched over to computers in the early 90's and look what happened!

December 7, 2002 by binthair (615 found) WHOHOO! We were first to find this excellent puzzle cache! When I first read the cache description I thought there was no way we would find this one. Neither my wife, nor I, nor our Wonder Dog are musically trained and we don't know of anybody close by who is. Nevertheless, we started doing the Transylvania Twist last night and finally got the dance steps right at about 8:00 pm. But it would be too scary to mess with vampires at night so we impatiently waited for the dawn. Went out this morning armed with crosses, mirrors and sharpened stakes. Found the cache at 10:08 am. Man, that Ionian Tusk is large! Big Beak was nowhere in sight. We took the drill bit set and left a quality can opener (that could be used to open some caches (or Nicodemus's coffin)). And, of course we signed the log. Nicodemus's coffin was quite intriguing, but he wasn't resting in it when we saw it. So, we couldn't use our sharpened stakes to end his wanderings forever. Be warned, he might just be lurking behind a scary tree waiting to pounce! Thanks to Zartimus for a VERY craftily woven story and Ionian melody. We don't think we'll ever get that damned music to stop playing in our heads. (Wonder Dog howled and begged us to stop playing it, so now at least he can rest.) Cheers! binthair, wife and dog PS:Zart...er... Nic sure has changed (according to the pic) since his gig at Barrymores in 1987. Heh,heh, heh!

December 6, 2002 by binthair (615 found) Ah Zartimus, your true identity is finally revealed! Scary!!! I am now under the spell of that vampirish music... Dee dul dee dul dee dul dee Dee dul dee dul dee dul dee.... (fade to the twilight zone)binthair (I think, some time ago. Next time I'll take a cross, a mirror and a sharpened stake.) PS: Great cache idea for the musically challenged.
